Keep in mind that this was also an art house film. The script, the cinematography, everything was designed to be intriguing and cool. This also came out in 2006 at the height of the hipsters. I lived in New York City then and saw this at some indie film house at the time. Sofia Coppola was definitely catering to a hipster audience

It always bothered me, how Marie Antoinette was portrayed as some naive country girl, overwhelmed by court etiquette. She was a daughter of the holy roman emperor. The Viennese court practiced the spanish court protocoll which was just as rigid and stiff (if not more so) than the French court protocoll practiced at Versailles. (For example, it also contained the rituals of the lever and coucher ceremonies, and access to court was even more restricted with ine having to prove to be a descendant of at least three generations of pure nobility to be even allowed at court.) Also, considering how Empress Maria Theresa raised her daughters specifically for marrying monarchs and becoming royal consorts and placing great emphasis on their education, you can only imagine that Marie Antoinette and her sisters grew up with a lot of lessons in court ettiquette. Something like the grand lever - how ever ridiculous it was - wouldn't have been new to Marie Antoinette and she certainly wouldn't have voiced her thoughts about how ridiculous she found it.

I absolutely love this scene. The whole protocol had become so sclerotic at the time Louis XV's and Louis XVI's reign, that it gives the scene a tragicomic feel if you know what history would still have in story for many of the women portrayed in this film. Most of them would be sentenced to death by some kangaroo court after the French Revolution had descended into the infamous "Reign of Terror". 1. Marie-Antoinette would be beheaded in 1792, i.e. 22 years after her first wake-up ceremony, in 1770. 2. The lady in charge of the protocol ("This, Madame, is Versailles") is the Countess of Noailles. She would be guillotined in 1794. 3. King Louis XV's mistress (Madame du Barry, not portrayed in this scene) was guillotined in 1793 According to the official records, both Marie-Antoinette and the Countess of Noailles kept their dignified composure on the scaffold, but Madame du Barry was terrified (can you blame her?). She had to be dragged to the guillotine kicking, screaming and begging for her life. 4. But the most awful way to die would be reserved to the lady who's washing Marie-Antoinette's hands in this scene and who would become her best and most loyal fried: the Princess of Lamballe. She was thrown to a bloodthirsty mob to be lynched. Some brute struck her with a pike on the head,. Other scumbags stabbed her to death and sliced of her breasts. She was beheaded with an axe. Her head was put on a spike and paraded through the streets of Paris while the populace were shouting "La Lamballe! La Lamballe".

How terrible! From what I’ve read the Revolution was just animalistic behavior on steroids. It’s sick that people would even act this way towards others. I understand the poor we’re genuinely suffering, but to act so viciously was just barbaric. It’s a shame watching these scenes and then remembering how badly it ended for them.
@Squagliafrittata5 ай бұрын
@@Bellasoboredthe Revolution wasn't more barbarian than any other ordinary war in history. It marks the end of the modern era and the start of contemporary world (1789-today). Thanks to God nobody has a position for being born noble or in a privileged family. We are all citizen with human rights, equally able to reach the top of the society, without any permanent order in our society. People should be grateful that the Revolution swept away the concept of aristocracy. Maybe today we complain about rich people, but they are immensely more equal to ours: classes in society doesn't exist anymore

The Austrian court seems colder and not so opulent as the French court, but it also seems much more relaxed in some ways.
@madeleinereads10 ай бұрын
In a way it was. It was also hard for Marie-Antoinette to adjust to the elaborate rituals of the French court, and she didn’t take them seriously.
@raphaelledesma93935 ай бұрын
The Austrian court was still heavily formal but the Austrians weren't known for being particularly hedonistic so Marie would have been shocked that the French King's mistress was not only tolerated but given a semi-official status. Also, I note that perhaps Austria was more highly cultured with many Classical musicians performing there.

Marie Antoinette still got a sweeter deal than many princesses. Her sister fell in love with nobleman but was forced to marry another one of higher status. Her favorite sister, Maria Carolina was forced to marry an ugly man who was engaged to their previous sisters and they hated each other for a while. Louis XVI had his issues but he was also as inexperienced and shy as Marie, not cruel nor ugly and they grew up together and grew to love each other.
@samanthasmith61 Жыл бұрын
and I also love that both her sister eventually become the power in those state, because their husband would rather go hunting or something. Maria Carolina became the real power behind Naples and Sicily, Maria Amalia became the real power behind Duchy of Parma. they really became just as capable as their mother, even Marie eventually showed those determination in her latter years
