Indeed a fantastic post...nothing like the voice of Mr. Danny Gallivan...so many nights I listened to the Sunday night HNIC national hockey broadcast...before it was eventually scrapped in the mid 70's. Used to love to be in bed with my little transistor radio under the covers. Listening to Danny Gallivan, Bill Hewitt and DanKelly. There was something special about those radio broadcasts...used to listen to the Calgary Centennial broadcasts too. Loved all the discussion and commentary after the whistle...The sounds of the crowd and organ. Shame the intermissions and post game were cut out of this, cant get enough of Gallivan's insight and delivery.

This video reflects the period of Canadian broadcasting before TSN and Sportsnet appeared - TV channels were far more mainstream than they are today. Instead of having a channel for everything as we do today, one's choices were much more limited in 1972. It was customary back then that CBC and CTV would share the broadcast. In this case, CBC did the first half and CTV the second. This game was the crowning jewel of those incredible Tiger Cat teams that were such a force from the mid 1950's to the 1970's. But let's give credit to Saskatchewan too. The Riders were an incredible team as well. As a result, it's not surprising that this was a remarkable game that went down to the very last play, and it's fun to watch this again.

Great game. I was there. Ron Lancaster actually had a great game, with something like 22 out of 29 passes completed, huge yardage. One long bomb he completed as he was falling back after being hit. The officials weren't too correct this championship and there was no play reviews like we have now. Ronnie and George's last big show. If the refs hadn't been biased on several important plays, the stubble jumpers would have won.

There were some bad calls in that 71 Grey Cup game. Linterman clearly fumbled the ball and it shouldnt have been blown dead. Mcquay's fumble was caused by the ground...the year before there was a new rule instated that the ground cannot cause a fumble. It was pretty messy game with Both QBs QBs playing poorly...Don't what Keeling was thinking on that pick by Thornton. Then there was Harry Aboffs booting the ball out of bounds. That 70 western final was epic...game 3 of a best of three...second to least year for that format.

Wow. There aren't flags thrown after every play. They actually let teams play the game, and compete against the opposition. I hate to say it, but this game felt more like a genuine game of Football than anything that's come from the NFL since the mid 90's.

Wikipedia has a page listing Grey Cup announcers. It says that Dick Shatto did the second-half colour commentary alongside Esaw.

The defining moments of that game had to be BC's third quarter drive for a touchdown. In a pass-first league, it was impressive to see an entire drive of running plays by halfback Cory Philpot and fullback Sean Millington. They looked unstoppable.
