Who was the KZbinr you mentioned that uses the 5 year journal as an art journal?

It's James Burke and if you search the name in You Tube his icon come up right at the top, but his journaling through Italy is like the second or third video I think.

I had the same idea for 2025 😄Only I got a regular 1-year Hobonichi A6 and planned to use it with only dry mediums. But now I'm excited to try it with gouache, so thank you for sharing!
@studio.spirit4 күн бұрын
That sounds cool, i have tried some dry mediums on the paper and they don’t quite stick it, its like the tomoe river paper is to smooth. Think some things like pencil crayons need a tooth. Glad you’re excited to try with gouache, i have already started today and i love it.

Mitsubishi sharpener is wonderful. I don’t use pastel pencils, but it’s fantastic for colored pencils and makes the points both sharp AND long. Since I like to use the side of the pencil, I really love the longer point.

Thank you for this great book review ! I feel gouache is the plain Jane, that's often overlooked, in comparison to the popular watercolors 😂 Off topic, may I ask what microphone/camera you're using. Your voice sounds so crisp and clear ! Perhaps, it's just your voice 😄
@studio.spirit3 ай бұрын
Thanks glad you like it. See now I see watercolour as the plain Jane lol the camera I use is Sony A7cii and sometimes iPhone 12pro but the mic is the Rode VideoMicro Compact (when I remember to bring it and put it in) otherwise it is just the in built mics on the devices and a bit of tweaking in editing.

This is really confusing because you’re trying to compare gouache with acrylic gouache so it’s all over the place I don’t understand it’s like comparing an apple to a banana which acrylic gouache is better for coverage and laying down smoothly?
@studio.spirit3 ай бұрын
Not really because at the end of the day, the only difference between the two is that acrylic gouache should be permanent ie it doesn’t reactive with water. Coverage, smoothness, pigments etc should be on par with one another.
@diannella3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the video. Is the only difference with the normal red version the green color? Or is this edition bigger or heavier?
@studio.spirit3 ай бұрын
I can’t say for sure as I don’t own the red one, but from what I can tell they are the same, they just released the green one as part of a Christmas collection a few years ago.

If you would like a cheap good version of this you can't beat the stabilo m80 works a treat and won't dint your pencils. My plastic m80 cost around 30 auDont forget to run graphite pencils through after your coloured pencils to maintain your blades on the crank shaft
@studio.spirit3 ай бұрын
Great Tip! To Maintain the blade. Thank you and great alternative for most pencils, but I have used the Stabilo M80 on pastel pastels and it doesn’t like the Hexagonal shape of the Caran dache pencils and tends to break easily.

I bought a small set of Caran D’Ache Neocolors on sale and also some Swisscolors, which are marketed as children’s’ supplies, but which some KZbinrs have said are the same product, with a different target audience. The big difference between the artist-quality and supposedly kiddie-quality was that the kiddie crayons had square ends, So, how to sharpen them? None of my rather large collection of mostly-useless pencil sharpeners (including the special ones for pastel pencils, which do work for that purpose) would work on the Neocolors. However, by determined browsing on Amazon I found a highly-recommended beauty crayon sharpener. My experience with this kind of sharpener (for sharpening lip and eye pencils) has generally not been great, but I didn’t like the art supply options for the Neocolors, either. Happy ending: the beauty pencil sharpener works perfectly on the Neocolors: sharpens even the blunt-ended kiddie crayons to a nice point without damage, unnecessary waste or any great effort or skill. Cost: £2-something, shipping included. Moral of the story: you don’t have to spend a two-figure sum to sharpen these crayons.
@studio.spirit4 ай бұрын
I haven’t and wouldn’t sharpen any of the Neocolour (oil, wax, or water soluble) with this as they are too soft. Am rather confused about you comparing Neocolour (crayon like) to swisscolours (pencils) in my experience two very different products. Glad you found something that works for you. I still use and enjoy using my sharpener for pastel pencils.

I've barely touched my Cousin this year as I keep getting too in my own head about it and feeling like each page has to look perfect and it becomes a chore. Your Hobonichi looks so cool! I really like your style of journaling. How do you print your photos so your dairy does not look very bulky? I've tried once scrapbooking in it, but it was so hard to write in it after only one month of pasting photos :(
@studio.spirit5 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yes the bits of packaging I put in made it hard to write ✍️ they maybe a few tiny holes where the pen went through lol but I still like to do it. The paper I use is either standard printer paper 90gsm with Gloo to stick em down or I use Epson photo quality sticker paper which is matte rather than glossy. Or am using up the last of my clear glossy vinyl paper. Hope this helps. Do you think I should do a separate video explaining how I print and what supplies I use?
