This position is the best moment in Barry's life! he has a well-paid job, his boss, who has connections in high society, respects him and assigns him an important task! all he had to do was get the job done and sooner or later he would achieve the position in high society that he was trying so hard to achieve in the future

I saw this movie when I was 16, 4 AM on my mothers upstairs, it forever left a mark on me to appreciate culture, also the disturbing part now that I'm older is that actions have consequences and you are who you are in your own "caste".

You know a part of me wants to tell that little kid you know that he can go screw himself but then again I do remember that scene in which Barry did very much blow smoke into his wife's face even after she made it clear that she wanted him to stop so in a way this guy is a jerk and kind of deserves his circumstances.

Love how back then, even though times were hard and you had to be a tremendous douchebag just to scrape by, people at least seem to have afforded themselves the simple luxury of exceedingly polite parlance hahahaha.

I always wondered what happened to the Chevalier after this (bear with me I haven't gotten a copy of the book yet). He kind of uncerimoniously drops out of the story after this scene.

In the book Barry is a much worse character, and interstingly after accepting his annuity he returns to England and before ending in Fleet Prison keeps up a correspondence with Lady Lyndon (who still loves him) until his death from Alcoholism in 1815.

3:30 1789 Its so obvious what the movie is about when you see the year it ends on. The twilight of 'Ancien Regime' Europe. Its also funny how Kubrick doesn't beat you over the head with it. Its just a detail on a letter. You might not even notice it. Heck if you lack any basic knowledge of history you wouldn't even realise this detail.
@florinivan69074 ай бұрын
There's a reason most seduction scenes in movies involve at least some dialogue. Its very hard to do it convincingly with just stares and breathing. At least convincing on camera. Only a couple of directors would even attempt this.

Next to Kurosawa, Kubrick is my favorite Director .This movie is a absolute masterpiece. It is very heartening to me to realize there so many people that appreciate and love this as much. The narration of Thackerays text is hypnotic. Ryan O'Neil performance was epic ,RIP
