Just dodge to the side when you are at his head. Also, if your character's feet aren't flat on the ground, it won't wort. Character size affects your ability to do this

Potara earrings are much stronger than fusion dance it's in the lore Potara earrings brings full potential to the user while the fusion dance only brings half of each I think
