the song but I went through the song line by line all those years ago and I found nothing I couldn't find anything. I found nothing, no one. So all have been explained to you hasn't it explain very carefully that someone needed to keep you quiet needed to keep you as a child to reassert the dream that you both clung on to because you had started to remember you've got to remember what happened here when you were a little boy. it wasn't an animal, it was you, you were just a child and you couldn't cope so you rationalized it into something very different

I felt it similarly. As an (autistic) kid, I had very high empathy but didn’t look like it, because naturally incompatible communication styles made it difficult to relate to and truly connect with my peers, so my strongest emotional attachments tended to be with animals. While the death of a childhood playmate would certainly have traumatized me, I’m sure the murder of one of my pets would have left me equally if not even more distraught. It’s never "just" a dog ; the bond between a child and their non-human best friend can truly mean the world to them (and it honestly still does for me even as an adult).

I just realized is that what Sherlock really needed was someone to comfort him like he comforts other people. He might seem cold and callous, but Sherlock is maybe the most empathetic person in the whole gang. Somehow he has this way of knowing right away when someone is in great emotional distress and knows how to talk them down and comfort them.

This twist was quite unnecessary. Sherlock losing a dog as a child would be a rational explanation for being the way he is, not forming further emotional attachments out of fear of loss.
