Love these videos and this “new” way of fishing for deep water cod. In this video, there’s a double hook up of “bank”rockfish/perch (around 11:00). I think these are actually speckled rockfish. The black-tipped lower jaw and more tan/yellowish coloring gives it away I think. True bank rockfish are a little more red and have more pronounced black spots. Anyway, just one rockfish lover’s opinion, haha. Keep up the good work.

Sick fishing! Heading on a 7 day trip in a few weeks and I want to buy a popping rod. Do you recommend the 20-80lb 7'10 rod or the next size up which is the 40-120lb test rod? What size st croix rod were you using and how big were the fish. Trying to figure out what size to get

7 day trip! That's going to be epic!!! we were using this rod - St Croix RIFT SALT SPINNING 7'10" Heavy Moderate Fast bit.ly/3ZibZOB I'd go the next size up, 40-120lb rating for the ability to handle the 100-150lb class of fish you may encounter. These fish were 40-80lbs with a few breaking 100 so we didn't need the heavier gear on this particular day.

@OliverNgy
@OliverNgy 5 күн бұрын
@MikeChen-1992 it is messier, a much bigger hassle and the amount of tiny fish you have to weed through is annoying. We busted their asses with the jigs in an effective and more importantly FUN manner. Fishing isn't about just catching fish for the sake of catching fish for me. It's about HOW we want to go about catching them and the experience building up to it. No dis to anybody that fishes bait though, we've all done it.

Glad you see you enjoying SPJ. Next time you're out there, see if allowing the rod to fully unload on the up-lift helps with creating action for the fall. The technique you're using is fine in a target rich environment with willing participants. But, I think you'll notice a big difference on the tougher days if you incorporate what I suggested. Tight lines
@OliverNgy
@OliverNgy 2 күн бұрын
I'll have to give that a shot, thanks for the tip! Here's a question I need to ask though, and please do not take this as an attack. Why would be fishing an area that isn't target rich? Keep in mind even in these target rich areas, I am able to generate bites when others in the boat cannot until I elaborate on these specific presentations. Every day, every spot, every drop and every fish responds different. That's what I love most about Jigging. The creativity we can impart.
@bennyortiz2770
@bennyortiz2770 2 күн бұрын
@ Not taking it as an attack at all, and a good question. You should always strive for a target rich environment - but the second part of my sentence is the key - with "willing participants." Sometimes your machine will be lit up with lock-jawed fish, and getting them to bite when they don't want to can be tough. What I'm seeing in the presentation here is that the rod is overloaded, and not fully able to unload/get maximum action on the jig. Oftentimes the retrieve is what triggers their interest, the fall often triggers the bite. Here, when you showed the technique of kind of violently lifting the rod a couple times, you can see that the tip never unloads. Check out some vids of either me, or Chad Busiere to see what I mean in terms of the unloading part. I love the enthusiasm and the passion you're bringing to SPJ on the West Coast. With this tip I'm hopefully pointing you in the right direction to keep progressing. Tight lines

@OliverNgy

We've caught them on several colors including orange, pink, chartreuse. Action of the jig is probably more important than the color at the depths we are targeting them at. Anything with Glow to it gives me confidence.
