Nice 👍 I have run Italian X Finish queens this year and they produced nearly twice as much honey as the Buckfast. I’m based in SW Ireland so it’s a bit cooler and damper compared to you. I’ve had Carniolan on the heather and they were amazing. The Buckfast weren’t great if it was too wet along with the Italian Finnish but hats off to the Carniolan. Overall, the Italian queens did the best this year

Good video! Finding in Canada that amitraz is not as effective as it once was. This year has been very low and manageable mite numbers - still treat with Oxalic acid vapor in the fall.

For any new beekeepers, look into the Rose Hive and method. All same size boxes and no queen excluder

I run double deep brood boxes on all my hives, and I NEVER USE QUEEN EXCLUDERS. And I also have double deep frames in all my double deep brood boxes, so they are 18.5" deep. And the honey crop on each of those frames are always close to 6" or more, and the queen has never crossed it. So there is no need to queen excluders in my apiary. And yet, more honey comes in. Thx for the video.

Interesting 👍 hi from central Otago southern New Zealand 👋😃 im running full depth boxes and i love queen excluders myself but i also clean them up completely when i pull my supers off, which i think makes a difference and its a fun winter job cleaning off the burr comb and getting them ready for the honey flow. i have to say i love those frame topbars, theyre much longer than ours and the old NZ langstroth topbars dont have a lot of grab room with gloves on😂 great video 👍👋😃

I demaree'd a hive and got the queen in the wrong box, luckily all the supers were on wide spacing so she couldn't lay into them. Honey regulations (the law) in the uk state that honey for sale must come from comb which hasn't had brood in.

Horrors 😂 queen in the wrong box on a demaree is problematic 😬 it's interesting that you have that law in the UK, I wasn't aware of that, I'm in southern New Zealand 👋😃 personally I love using queen excluders I run deeps for everything including supers, but I think it's a personal preference thing, and I always clean up my excluders when I take them off, removing all the burr comb, so I don't have any issue with restrictions when I put them on. Interesting comment 👍👋

Great video, nothing like experimenting for yourself. Given the choice I think bees would say no to an excluder every time😊 It's good though for the beekeeper to have a good think why they should (or shouldn't use them). Personally I use them, as I don't really like the idea of extracting honey from frames that might contain eggs, brood etc. Ta for taking the time and effort putting these videos out.

This year, i ran a number of colonies without a queen excluder. Also on Abelo and Timber. Ended up with an empty bottom deep, as the queen moved up the stack, and brood was spread through all boxes. Was a big mess. I'm not doing it again. Had a visit from local seasonal bee inspector. I felt embarrassed as he had to inspect every box, as all had had some brood in them.

Hive open, queen outside the hive. Looks like a beekeepers mistake. Hardy a coincidence that the queen is on a leaf outside the hive while you have a camera. Unless the beekeeper tried to introduce a foreign queen to the hive so they ejected her.

Couldn’t agree more about Northumberland Honey queens. I’ve bought a good few over the last couple of years and they have been consistently good. This year was my first year using Buckfast from them. I over wintered one queen as an experiment and took it to my mother’s house to give her something to watch over the summer. It turned out to be my best hive. Seven supers completely full and it would have done many more if I had been tall enough 😂. One was a brood box because I had Demaree’d it mid season. You have a great channel and it’s a pleasure when you post a new video. Wishing you every success from sunny Lancashire

I did my first solo attempt this year too. I melted the cappings in an old slow cooker with a jug of water in it, when melted I turned off, waited until next day, and took it out and cleaned it off same as you did. I melted again in a bain Marie (you can use a glass bowl on top of a pan of water) . I have a small metal milk jug, and I got a piece of muslin and put it on the top held in place with an elastic band - the cloth pushed down slightly. I then poured from bain Marie into jug through cloth - was super clean!. I didn't have any bar moulds or candles, so I poured into some silicone ice cube trays to save it until I know what to do with it!

Good to see something from Europe for a change. Congratulations on a nice looking harvest. Here in south west France, everything has been delayed due to the same rain events, but now it's all picking up nicely. I'm hoping to get my first harvest in a week or two - this is my second year, now with 6 hives. If there is a decent harvest, I don't know what I'll end up doing with it all. Christmas presents perhaps for my friends and neighbors... It would be nice to learn how much your two boxes yielded. Cheers.

That first nail was a bugger 😂 Thanks. Plenty of no nonsense, no measuring advice. Inherited and bought second hand most of my 40-50 hives, just starting to build more. Just one note, the vents can be pinned to bits the crownboard rest on if you bend them at a right angle. Bees propolise them over time to stop all air flow and you cannot remove them if they are in the recommended position.
