I think Dexter is like that one annoying kid we hung out with and ticketed with as kids because we had just enough in common and our parents were friends. I think that is the Dexter and Brutus relationship right there and Pixie is too young and small to hold any resentment to him so she stays with Brutus who wants her to have friends so he doesn't shove his negative opinions of him on her in private. I have a little sister and it was much the same thing for me.
