The Americans knew TSR2 was better than anything they could come up with. PERIOD. The British had the best aircraft design people anywhere on the planet. Period. The only problem was England had no money and influence to convince Australia etc. to buy this fantastic aircraft. The F111 was total rubbish in comparison.

What the difference between IMU and INS ?
@theaviator386315 күн бұрын
Basically, an IMU is simpler, providing raw sensor data, while an IRS (specifically the Inertial Platform or IRU) fuses sensor inputs and offers more accurate navigation information. If you need precise position and attitude data, an IRS is the way to go!

One of the most innovative eras for the UK. Politicians messed it up though. For example gifting the Soviets Rolls Royce jet engines as 'a peace gesture'.

I wonder if the spitfire had the ability of tilting the tip 3rd of its wings back 45deg it would have made a difference in a dive?

44:37 Just to clear up a myth here, this airframe being burnt was actually just a wooden mockup and NOT an actual production airframe. It burnt because it was wood, nothing to do with any magnesium. My source is the book TSR-2: Britain's Lost Bomber, it clarifies this myth.

I never understood the '57 white paper cancelling manned fighters. Its not as if Britain was a world leader in missiles.

I'm sure the US put alot of pressure behind closed doors to shut the project down and no doubt reminded the British government of its WW2 debts.

Although there were cases of the MOD testing biological weapons between between 1940 and 1979 which is pretty shocking, what amazes me about these conspiracy theorists, is that do they really think that all the commercial airlines are in on it? That not one of them didn't want to be involved? Also they fly across multiple air spaces, so obviously all governments must be in on it. It is just ludicrous!

The USA needed to destroy the UK Aerospace competition, and our damn government made it happen. I suspect there were many backhanders involved.

Bollocks. Don’t blame America. Your politicians killed the TSR2, as well as destroying your domestic aircraft and automotive industries through government interference in private business

It is a bit surreal listening to the news clips in these episodes regarding the build up to Operation Iraqi Freedom - and to know that we are now 20+ years on and that a number of these pilots are now in senior roles within the RAF.

Firstly check out the demise of the Avro Arrow and see how that played out and where the high value project engineers ended up. Secondly the high level flight became a no no after the Russians got their act together with their SAMS. Thirdly after the uk was introduced to the F111 and its low level prowess, someone flagged up that the uk had an aircraft already in service use that could fly a tad lower, faster and at 10% of the cost and that was the Buccaneer.

13:20 arrogance from an elderly navigator. Good luck with that attitude when he's applying to be an airline pilot. If he was in the right seat flying next to me, he'd not enjoy it much.

Once worked briefly with an older gentleman in Christchurch NZ who was often a bit bullied by his manager when they came to our agency for the project they were contracted on. I found out a little later on the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain that he was at the time a 21 year old Spitfire pilot turning and ducking over England and the channel to fight and try keep alive. I rang him and wanted to acknowledge him and ask him about his experiences. Told me the Spitfire was a beautiful aeroplane to fly. Humble to the last. I remember you Norman Ramsey and enjoyed meeting and working with you. Years later I saw his picture in England as that 21 year old with his squadron mates waiting to scramble. Those of us who lives in the shadow of their service and sacrifice have no idea.
