You can download black and white ornament maps from Google. You can also create black and white maps yourself, using Photoshop, or in 3Ds Max itself, using color correction.

Here is an important point. The 3D object that you want to overlay another 3D object on must have a modifier Turn To Patch. 3Ds Max has some bugs. Sometimes you need to do an Reset XForm. To reset the object settings.

Unfortunately, I didn't see the animation tab there, which is in the Noise modifier. I don't think it will be possible to do it the way you want with this modifier.

Of course, there can be a transition. I have a full video on Loft, you can watch it. In general, in Loft, you need to set the % of the line correctly. If you want to make the transition less visible, try reducing the distance in %.
