The stores here saw the label change and thought these were some special release. They’re charging $60 to $70.

Would agree with some, prices are crazy and bourbons aren’t that different. Will wait for prices to come down!

I can say I have never had a hang over on Blantons

I’ve only had one Blanton’s but it was extremely unremarkable. Nothing awful, just bland. I blinded it multiple times against bottles of similar proof like Michter’s U.S. 1 Bourbon and Maker’s 46 and it was shocking how quickly Blanton’s fell to last place. I would be curious to see you blind your “good” Blanton’s against some regular shelf products around 90ish proof. Maybe I also have a dud bottle, but if a “good” Blanton’s struggles to beat sub $40 products then I have a problem with the pricing. The collectibility of the bottle isn’t worth a massive markup to me.

I just had the opportunity to try a new (to me) Japanese whisky and it was so good! I have previously purchased a Hibiki and was kind of lukewarm about it. I gifted my Son a bottle of his choice for Christmas. I wanted to get hin a Kilchoman Loch Gorm, but couldn't find one anywhere. We went to several shops and he settled on a Japanese Malt whisky called the Matsui. For this bourbon loving guy, it was quite tasty, light and easy drinking. I would put it in a likeness to Oban. It ran about $100 a bottle after all of the Washington state taxes, etc. I would buy it again, but I'd really like to obtain that Loch Gorm!

Nelson Bros sucks. I thought it was absolute garbage. I love BMR. Tried Nelson when I learned it was being discontinued but I was not a fan at all.

I enjoy Blantons, I've got the whole set, unopened. And I've got a few extra bottles. The one I have open right now is outstanding. And I put a charred oak spiral in another bottle 3 months ago. And, all my bottles were bought at msrp!!!

Sounds like your first single barrel was a dud. I will say I prefer Eagle Rare over Blantons as a lower tier BT bottle. 🥃🥃🥃

I've tried a few Blanton's and found them distinctly average, but I have not yet tried the one a friend has described as 'an absolute stinker'! The hyped bourbon I've had worse luck with has been Henry McKenna, where it has ranked from 'meh' to 'drain cleaner' - I haven't had one yet that I liked...

I do find a variation in Blantons. I also find that they open up with time. I have yet to have a bad one like you. It is an easy sipper for me. I would not pay secondary for it.

Really like this video an ideas. For smaller distilleries to check out the following were excellent that I tried this year - Glen's Creek, Middle West Spirit, Frey Ranch, Iron fish distillery, Chattanooga, Old fourth distillery, and Bull Run. As far as my goals they are to not spend as much I couldn't stop finding unicorns this year and need to slow down and pay off my CC. I want to get back to Sibs as they are amazing and also I don't find them as often and will save money. Lastly I plan to finish some bourbons in Maple syrup and honey to see what I can come up with and then share some 375 ml bottles with friends. Have a great year....cheers.

Have you tried the Iron Fish aged in maple syrup barrels? I have loved the Widow Jane Decadence that is aged in maple syrup barrels as well and I'm curious about the Iron Fish version. The Decadence isn't overly sweet, just a nice hint of the maple syrup. I put it in my top two or three bourbons,

I was too lucky with bourbon in 2024. This year I’ll probably buy a little less and stick to more favorites. Also gave away a lot of bottles in 2024, depleting the stash of favorites (e.g., Weller 12, EHT SB, Blanton’s, etc…) depleting backups and ending up with empty spaces.

My goal is to have fewer bottles in my collection. So I am very narrowly focused on what I will buy this year. I applaud your goal three. I did that last year and has been very beneficial.

Wood Hat distillery out of Missouri has some great bourbons. They source their own food grain corn and actually store their barrels in connex boxes. Some great stuff you can actually order directly from their website. Strongly recommend their bloody butcher corn and wheat whiskey

I’m not too excited for much of anything atm bourbon wise. I’m just to the point in my bourbon journey that I’m done with the bs surrounding all these releases. Too much money and hype for mostly meh bourbon. Craft whiskey is just getting out of hand price wise. With Brown Forman cutting jobs and Ross and Squibb cutting production I get the feet the bourbon bubble has or is very close to bursting.
