Love this explanation Pete, about using flat 3rds, 5ths, 7ths, and avoiding the happy 3rd, to get this modal sound for a number like this. I'm taking up the banjo now, after attending several WM camps. My teacher is Mike Thomas, great guy. Banjo is much more fun than guitar, I almost hate to say. Cool ending run there too. Thanks for posting this. Jim

Sorry my not believing in a supernatural deity gave you reason to trash my music. Differences of belief like that need not separate people. I'm a law-abiding person who loves my country and believes in the Golden Rule. Your loss unfortunately. If you apply that standard to other things you might enjoy, you'll end up missing out on a lot. Quite a few atheists out there, many in the closet thanks to intolerant people.

Greetings Mr Wernick! I hope your doing well. I found your channel after seeing your comment on a Hot Rize video concerning your 1974 MXR phase 90, I bet you still have it! So I’m not a very good banjo player but I’ve been hacking away at it on and off for about 30 years. I had your instruction book for a while (I think I lent it to someone) but I didn’t even know who you were/are . Now after seeing who you are and your playing I want your book back, but I can’t remember who I lent it to! Glad I found you!

No problem there. You won't be in them. I'm feel deeply fortunate for the gift of music, but I can't accept and take seriously a concept that seems imaginary to me. I try to go by the Golden Rule as much as I can, hope you do too.

You can play the same songs, but with a different technique. And different chord fingerings because 4 string banjos are tuned differently. Probably C G D A He is playing “scruggs style”/3 finger style. And its tuned g D G B D

You go girl. The 5 string banjo is the only instrument of American heritage and from the hills of Appalachia. There is nothing that sounds sweeter than a well played 5 string banjo. “Bluegrass” Is the best. Remember if you want the strings to last you a while, be sure you wash your hands before you play and wipe the strings down when you are done with something like cotton t-shirt. I wish you lots of luck and don’t give up on your present. Practice often and soon you will surprise yourself.

@@slowpoke7759 I need the muscle memory in my hands to increase so I can keep up those patterns. Even so, it makes such a lovely sound with chords and I can tease a few songs out of it already! Thanks for the encouraging comments🌞

Catherine Summers Remember you just got this instrument. It takes tons of practice. It would be good to surround yourself with the music of bluegrass. If want to surprise your ears, look up this song on KZbin “ Love, Oh Love Please Come Home” by Don Reno and Red Smiley. You will hear many combinations rolls and the man plays a banjo without a capo. He was one the grandfathers of the 5-string banjo. I met the man more than 45 years ago. I know you will like that song, because you cannot stop patting your foot. He was one of the best and so was Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. My dad wrote some songs for them. Also give a listen to “The Roving Gambler” by Ralph and Carter Stanley” also KZbin. This is a great banjo tune from the Clinch Valley of Virginia way back in early ‘60’s. You note the different style of banjo picking. You will also like. Add the original version of a “Man Of Constant Sorrow”.

I used to go to Shakey's Pizza Parlor back in the mid 60's to eat pizza and listen to banjo music. The founders of the pizza chain were fans of New Orleans Jazz. Not sure if they played a four or five string or even a plectrum banjo.

Hi PeteJust happened on this interesting clip when you & Joan were on Danish TV. I wonder if the Danes have picked up on Bluegrass banjo now as well as many other European countries? No doubt your appearance inspired many to start learning the banjo.Very much enjoying your Homespun Make Up Your Own Solos . Spending a lot of time on it and really like your teaching style. It works well even without tab.Never Let Your Deal Go Down , Molly Malone etc . Great , fairly easy to follow lessons. Up the neck D very helpful. Thanks very much.Mike
