What a beautiful dark velvety voice without any signs of wobble at all, so rare to see for a hochdramatische.

Problemi di intonazione??? Che cantate sopravvalutata ma perché ? La voce è brutta e stridente non molto ferrata tecnicamente …..misteri del canto e delle carriere

Fascinating to hear Jones as Sieglinde at that point because she was singing a lot of Brunnhildes and Isoldes by then. In the early-1980s, she tended to sing sharp, as she does here. 30 years later, she taught a young soprano Der Manner Sippe in a master class. Wonderful technical and interpretive advice, none of which she herself follows here! But it’s still a great listen.

On Instagram a couple of years ago, Cheryl Studer wrote this: _”…It was Maestro Nagano's first Elektra, and during the first musical rehearsal Dame Gwyneth wasn't feeling comfortable with some of the tempi, etc. Instead of getting in a "Machtkampf", Nagano just asked her to show him what she wanted. She did this for the entire opera! The result was a very accomplished musical success.”_ (I would post the link here if it were not for the fact that KZbin often blocks comments containing links.)

I love Gwyneth, especially in her more lyrical singing such as here. Such a warm, womanly tone. Supremely musical.

A few years earlier I saw Jones in this role at the same theatre - Ruth Falcon, Helga Dernesch, Robert Schunk, Siegmund Nimsgern.

I was present for this. It was truely a magical performance. It all came together to create an otherworldly atmosphere. Jones was monumental in voice and acting as was Popov. Millo created a very,"spiritual," Liu by way of skillfull singing and beautiful sound. For me, she was always remarkable when portraying deeply spiritual characters such as, Aida, Margherita(Boito's Mefistofeles) and Liu. Vernon Hartman was a greatly underrated Lyric Baritone able to inject real personality into his supporting roles. I was fortunate enough to hear him as Scarpia in a New Jersey performance. We need to be thankful that some of these Met supporting singers with fine voices and superb training traveled outside New York to bring us real professional talent.

A difficult work. Jones is wonderful here - though I'm glad I saw Jessye Norman perform it.

I saw one of the performances in this run, it was superbly sung and acted by Dame Gwyneth, even if one critic cruelly titled his review "Granny get your gun".

Gwyneth was a wonderful Fanciulla. I remember these performances well. She received critical press but the audience loved her!

I'm glad that I was able to see a lot of Jones in Berlin. She always had this wobble and often had a lisp. But the sounds that came out of this rather delicate person made the chandeliers shake and the audience - many gay men as a rule, was always close to fainting. You can hear it well here with "Was bluten muss?" Jones hurls the staccati into the hall like no other. And she was loud about it, which is not at all clear in recordings. Jones was one of the last charismatic singers and the Elektra, Isolde and Brünnhilde sung on stage today no longer do justice to these highly dramatic roles.

Danke, danke!
@ThomasBerger-de6tqАй бұрын
Die beste bekannte Aufnahme? Ich weiß nicht. Kastu ist genau so katastrophal wie in der Dorati Aufnahme und Martons Sopran klingt oft zu spröde außerdem ist der Altair stimmlich zu leicht besetzt. Zudem einige Striche!

Many many thanks! I saw Dame Gwyneth as the Marschallin in New York, early-1980s, with Tatiana Troyanos and Kathleen Battle as her co-stars, Levine conducting. It’s amazing how her voice stayed beautiful and shimmering in this role, all through the years. The same couldn’t always be said for her more heroic roles. In modern times, I think her only competitors in this role were Te Kanawa and Fleming.

The cast caused a frenzy in the audience, even though Cossotto was told by the Chorus Master to not expect much applause that night. She was surprised at the audience's reaction after the Canzone del Velo, to which the Chorus Master simply shrugged at her as he too was shocked. If I am not mistaken, the audience was not made up of the general public.

One simply has to accept that Jones' vibrato is wide and that she sings approximate pitches occasionally, but what annoys the *@!( out of me is that she is almost always behind the conductor's beat - like a second or more behind the beat. She's an intelligent lady, with great stamina and often thrilling high notes and more than ample volume. She's one of the best Marschallin's I've ever heard and I admired her Fidelio and even Tosca, but why o why does she not respect the conductor, with whom, one presumes, she rehearsed prior? Maddening!

Thank you very much for this performance! I hope you don't mind, if I tell you something about the cast. First: there is no singer with the name "Franz Wilbrink" (only "Hans ...", who sings the Notary in this performance). Faninal's Majordomo must have been Franz Klarwein, as he did in the later performance, 31th July this year. In that performance, the four lackeys were sung by Rudolf Schwab, Walter Brem, Werner Liebl and Artur Horn. The Animal Seller was Rudolf Chizzali and the Milliner Kirsti Rix Forsman. Thank you again, Martin
