It is a seventies transceiver, made from 1973 to 1979 or so. Not an 80s model…

Believe it or not... I had a friend who had one of these and we had to rewind the transformer to get it to work..... Is Dad worked at Bell labs and could get the wire.. what an experience that was... The true definition of power, WATTAGE!

Sounds like it has the ssb filter. The relay for 20 meters maybe sticky on the filter board . If it been sitting it happens I bet when you got it it was on 20 meters for years then finally you put power to it it got stuck in between then you hit it again it musta worked it’s self into place I run 20 meters for awhile to get the juice 🧃 flowing in that 20 meter section 73. Another classic radio. Anyway sir, I do have a question. My late father inlaw left me an Icom IC-735. It only turns ON, no rx, haven't tried to transmit for I don't have the right antenna for it yet. It was just in storage for more than 15 years. But prior to that, it was working as it should. Do you think recapping the whole thing would bring it back to life? I really would appreciate it.
@bramfam4
@bramfam4 12 күн бұрын
You may not really need to do that with the 735. I have a friend who has one and it still has original caps.

Having built a simple tube tester for valve amp tubes, I've often wondered how much ( I assume anode current ) is being measured when the meter indicated just into the GREEN region and at FSD as there seems to be a wide variation. Have you ever measured this? Regards Geoff.

@@bramfam4 so you're a new comer to the hobby :) they came out early to mid 80's as a superior version of the 770. my version is badged up Trio which was the UK brand of Kenwood at the time, so any Kenwood would be EU or rest of the world versions. only issue i have is the VFO is ages and skips a lot, but i have just fitted CTCSS in mine to at least be able to use it more rather than just 'ocassionally'

Fantastic receiver in these! Stands up well on the Sherwood Engineering website, even against current production models. The last Kenwood hybrid is their best. Really thinking about swapping my TS-530S for one of these. (Hanging on to my 599D Twins though!)

I had one of these and noticed the internal memory unit had 256 memories but the switch only proved 8 steps to I put another 8 posistion switch through the Phones hole and rewired it internally as 8 x 8 and it worked great.

I've wanted one of those for a while, but SWL is pretty dead these days. Really sad. When I was young the SW bands were chock full of stations from all over the world. Now there's practically nothing. A casualty of the internet.

So special to see this in action. This was the model of the first RX I purchased in the late 1970's and I am so sad I let it go. listening to shortwave with modern kit does not have the magic that the 7700 used to bring.

As a ham starter I am thinking of buying this tuner instead of an automatic one that is brand bound, this one is future-proof and also not brand-bound for buying newer rigs in the future no? And you crank up power if need later...
