Bernstein could be modern without being off-putting, which is something that most of his contemporaries could not do. He also could be light without being light-weight, and when he used modern devices, such as tone rows or atonality, it always seemed natural and organic, not a system or an experiment.
Somehow it foreshadows the Stravinsky's symphonies 10 years later. Impressive how distinct is Copland style
