A response to Ben Harris regarding the time controls: The approach I'm familiar with is having a move cap. In checkers, if a game goes 25 moves without a win or piece getting captured, then it ends in a draw. I'm not saying this is appropriate for Hive, but it's a solution on the table.
@PlayHiveLikeaChampionАй бұрын
There has been a lot of discussion about this. In chess, for example, there is the Fifty-Move-Rule, which states that either player can claim a draw if there has been no piece captured or no pawn move (either of which would fundamentally change the position on the board) within 50 moves. But in Hive, with no piece capture, a move such as this would be very difficult to define. Please propose the rule definition, either here (or better yet on Discord discord.gg/k3gq5sxC)

@superking208Ай бұрын
The Spider really doesn't bother me. A piece that moves exactly n spaces is always going to be trickier to consider on a hexagonal board than on a rectangular board. I'm curious how much of the Spider's bad reputation is from digital players that have become accustomed to being explicitly shown valid moves during play.
@PlayHiveLikeaChampion8 сағат бұрын
That is an interesting thought. Playing on-line ensures that one does not make an illegal Spider move. But I don't think that this adds to player's complaints about the Spider. I try to ignore these complaints! The Spider is the Spider, no more, no less. PS - It pleases me to win with a Spider move.
@mattjenkinscomicАй бұрын
Thank you for the videos. In my opinion, the problem with the spider in general is it doesn’t do anything unique. Every other bug feels “special” whereas the spider can just move 3 spaces. Wish it were designed in a way to bring something interesting to Hive.
@0x7fac3d-zw7ghАй бұрын
It does, though! It's the only piece that has to move exactly some number of spaces, so it has unique strategies like reindexing that don't apply to any other bugs!
@benharris3285Ай бұрын
I actually don’t think this spider is that great objectively, or at least not the way that white followed it up. It’s basically just a waste of tempo since I wanted to play my pillbug anyway. I think probably attacking immediately with the mosquito was a bit adventurous and I should have just played another ant instead and black is completely fine
@PlayHiveLikeaChampionАй бұрын
thanks for commenting Ben... and congratulations on your advancement into the Finals!
@PlayHiveLikeaChampionАй бұрын
you are correct the spiders were not the key to winning, but this game shows two ways to use spiders! and i disagree... Grasshoppers > Spiders
@superking208Ай бұрын
I guess I'm biased because I've read "Like a Champion" several times, but the way you discuss Hive in chess-like language successfully dissuaded me from thinking of some pieces as inherently better than others. I'm sure even the greatest chess players of all time had an opportunity at some point to outsmart brilliant opponents with an overlooked pawn. "The right man in the right place can make all the difference in the world..."
@PlayHiveLikeaChampionАй бұрын
@@superking208 Interesting comment! Thank You! You are, of course, correct. There are situations where any specific piece may be more valuable than the other pieces because this piece can deliver the win and that piece cannot. But, in general, it is recognized that the Spider is the weakest. For example, There is nothing that the Spider can do that an Ant cannot also do. (This brings up the 'Isn't the Spider a weak Ant' argument (which I hate to hear)).

Spiders > Grasshoppers. Anyway I don't think in this game the spider was the key of the win, black was good until move 23.
@PlayHiveLikeaChampionАй бұрын
You are correct in that the spider moves were not instrumental to the victory. I wanted to show how spiders can be used in various ways. And I disagree completely with the 'Spiders > Grasshoppers' evaluation. There are more cases where a Grasshopper can do something that a Spider cannot, then the other way around. Throughout the game black had a flexible position with the pocket, which also gives mobility to the queen when occupied. A move that would give problems to black would be 17 wM \bQ. If 18 bL -wL, blacks pocket is destroyed, blacks queen is stuck, and white can aim to free up his beetle/mosquito to keep attacking. If black resists 17 by playing 18 bA /bP (looking to beetle recover) white can force the queen to move with 19 wA bQ/, and no matter where she goes white has good prospects

I thought white could move the ant in between the black spider and black ant at the bottom, creating a ring and threatening to take the kill with the white beetle. I don't see a way for black to break the ring without allowing either the white ant or the white beetle to take the kill.
