Personally volume matching the tracks with a small loop and quick switching through the A/Bs would make the effects more transparent. I kinda left this video not hearing the actual difference.

Fair enough, the difference was less subtle before KZbin compression, but after KZbin compression the difference is even more subtle

Hi, I liked your video very much! I was however wondering, can you connect the line out of eg the op-1 to the phono or radio in on the Uher? It’s different voltages right? Thanks in advance!

I don't know what cassette players in Europe have varispeed like this, but I think you can still find them on eBay and places like that. These are made in Japan so I think they did ship them to many countries.

There’s a workaround for using loops on this that doesn’t involve modding the machine, but the cassette. You just do a loop over both spindles, but add a rubber band for traction.

It's no exaggeration to say that Koyaanisqatsi changed the way that I see films and the way that I hear music. It was and is an incredibly moving experience and one that has shaped my views on so many things in ways that I cannot quite put into words--perhaps that's part of it--it helped me to see that sometimes some things are better left unsaid and better expressed through image and (wordless) sound. Glass' influence cannot be overstated and your pieces are a fitting tribute. Too bad I'm in the Midwest..... Break a leg!

Great video. I've been tempted by these colour format things after building (and loving) DIYRE's OLA5 and EQP5 500 series units. Id love to see these tape saturation units compared to Sound Skulptor's TS 500 units as well. Curious if you've had the chance to give those a spin.

Hi there, thank you! I have not tried the Sound Skulptor TS500. I'm sure it is very useful so if it speaks to you I just suggest trying it and see what you think. That said for me I like the colors platform because in addition to the tape saturation color there's so many other colors that are interesting and you can chain them and per color they're pretty cheap.

@SycamoreWillow
@SycamoreWillow Жыл бұрын
Ah yeah. I've always shied away from hitting record for hours on end because the thought of going back to listen seems too daunting. As a creative person/artist I'm always trying to lower the barriers to entry for things like this. So my preference is to one of the following. - Judiciously press record whenever something interesting is going on. - If I'm letting it roll for a while, never let it go beyond a few minutes without something interesting happening. If for example 5 minutes go by and nothing got me excited I'll just delete it straight away - Also if I'm rolling and something really cool happens, as soon as I have a hand free I'll drop a marker in the project. In my DAW I just press "m" so it's really easy and even reflexive by now In general, I bias towards editing when things are fresh and not to get too sad if I lose something. New ideas and sounds are always gonna come!

Stumbled across your channel, just a little while ago. I like it! I think i like it because i have similar interests in that i like to use old and new gear to make interesting hybrids. I like your idea of having a sampler 'ready' to capture a sound or performance to add to an archive of sounds you may come back to. It's something that i should really be doing. I hope you don't get pressured into making content just for the sake of it. I think the idea is to make interesting content, and not feel that you have make something everyday or every week. Thanks man!
@SycamoreWillow
@SycamoreWillow Жыл бұрын
Hey there, thanks for this thoughtful comment! It's funny you mentioned feeling pressure to constantly create content. Like many others, making videos for KZbin became a nice outlet for me during lockdown. Now that we're free to move about I'm more focused on performing and somehow just generally a lot busier. In a way I'm grateful for the time during lockdown where I could focus so heavily on music. That said I'm not grateful for the pandemic of course. Anyway, I have some ideas for new videos to make but I'm in no rush. Sometimes it's just a beautiful day and you need to get outside and ride bicycles or feel the warm sun while hanging out in the park with friends. Take care!

@SycamoreWillow
@SycamoreWillow Жыл бұрын
In your case it's almost certainly just a matter of getting 4 RCA-to-TS cables. Two going into the recorder and two going out. So connecting instruments to the reel-to-reel recorder you'll only want to connect the line inputs and outputs of the reel-to-reel to your interface. I'm not familiar with your interface so I can't really give you any advice on that. But in general if you can get signal routed to the lineouts of your interface you'll be able to record to tape. If you connect the line out from your recorder to line inputs on your interface you'll be able to record the output from tape to your daw. Hope that helps let me know how it goes!

This and some other machines like the aph have the pitch slider, its basically a digital pitch shifter. It was used to pitch correct voice when slowing down or speeding up the tape. I'd love to add a dedicated play head, feedback etc and make a delay with one. Reet gnarly pitch shifting delay

The issue I keep having with the Morphagene is that is a pain to get it back to play at normal speed after you have tweaked with the speed knob. They should've made a virtual indent.

On the one hand I completely agree with you and beyond that I wish you could somehow get it back to an exact pitch you said I'm sure there's a way to do it but it's of course not built into the device. But on the other hand sometimes wild unpredictable devices can really force one to be creative

This is great - I came across one of those Nagra speed controls which is superb for making spacey tape delay effects but I think my machine has the speed socket as well - I’d never thought of using it to CV pitch a loop!
@jezstevens
@jezstevens Жыл бұрын
…just double checked and it’s just the 1/4” socket but it occurs to me I could mod my speed regulator box to include a CV in - that way I could potentially “tune” the tape speed ie pitch of the loop with the knobs and then play CV pitches in! Game changer!
