The IS prefers premium but will operate okay on regular, though if you throttle hard the engine will pull timing & run rich, so you lose top end & your MPG is worse. However if you tried to use regular unleaded on high pressure performance turbocharged cars (e.g. WRX STI or CLA 45 AMG) then be prepared for serious knocking or expensive repair bills.

Premium fuel is required not optional for this car. It is designed to run at that higher octane, the computer has to reprogram for lower octane fuel using the knock sensors, it decreases power and WILL make your engine die sooner.

Litters / gallon per 100 km or 62 miles is a much better measure of fuel mileage or economy as it measures how much fuel you need to cover a certain distance whether its up hill or downhill, loaded or unloaded it will apply to every ICE vehicle.

Premium fuel? Running the highest grade fuel in a vehicle built to run on regular 87 octane won’t hurt the engine but it won’t produce a better or more favorable result. Doing so will cost you more to fill up but with no benefit to justify the increased cost to fill up.

It actually can cause engine problems down the line. If your vehicle is tuned for anything less than premium fuel than that premium fuel won't get burned off like it would in a car tuned for premium. Sure preformance won't be affected but the build up from the unburnt fuel over a long period of time will eventually lead to problems in the engine.

Absolutely. My Kia Soul got about about 30 around town with but 34 with non-ethanol. My vehicle only ever saw a coupla tanks of ethanol.. one originally from the dealer and the 2nd from me when I checked the mileage. Then I ran a few tanks through with non-ethenol before checking it again with non. Another big thing is if you plan on keeping your vehicle for years after its paid for you do NOT wanna be using flex in that vehicle! Why? Because ethanol attracts water BUT your fuel system is not very big on that stuff.

My 9th gen impala is an e85, but I've been using regular gas. Idk if my leak from my purge valve has anything to do with it, but i changed the purge valve out, but my engine light was always on. I started to use e85, and the engine light went away so far. Im going to put an oil catch can in, and with the PVC valve, im going to drill them 3 holes to make them a little bigger. Im goi g to start usi g the recommended oil, and the oil filter that chevrolet wants to use on these cars.

Mobil One fully synthetic and a AC/Delco oil filter is what GM recommends as well as running the correct weight of oil that said vehicle calls for due to the VVT. I run Signature Series fully synthetic AMSoil (5w30) in my 2013 Chevy Suburban with a Wix oil filter and I’ve noticed it runs a lot better with no issues.

i have a 2013 impala with a flex fuel 3.6. these cars have 2 tunes. one that runs with standard fuel and one with E85 they both run learning the drivers driving style. The gasoline is test driven and set from the factory but the E85 takes 100 miles of driving to set the driving style. if it tunes from a led foot it will be more responsive and allow more immediate power. if you granny drive, the tune it will learn to cut power and accelerate slow. It does have adaptive learning so if you start lead footing it it will relearn and will pump more fuel and respond quicker. all newer cars have adaptive learning and flex fuel cars have 2 tunes and fuel maps that self configure. Drive how you want it to react and 100 miles later it will retune. Sometimes quicker but its recommended up to 100 miles.

Some premium gas is ethanol-free. This is mostly a regional thing. If your premium was E-0 and your 87 octane was E-10, this would also cause a discrepancy like this. Did you verify that both fuels contained the same ethanol concentration?

I check my odometer by comparing to the mileage markers along a long stretch of highway. The markers are supposed to be accurate. I’ve found that different brands of tires will vary by up to in inch in diameter size. Best to make a simple wooden caliper and actually measure diameter. Also tire pressure variance will greatly affect fuel consumption. Also to be considered is whether you’ve gained elevation during your drive . An increase of even 200’ over 50 miles will make a noticeable difference in fuel economy. Make sure to travel the same stretch of road when doing your testing. I’d like to see you incorporate all of theses factors into your calculations and see your results.

I've always been told to put the largest tire you can stuff under the fender Wells regardless of the speedometer because you'll get more miles out of the tires heavy Vehicles eat tires. And when you go to sell it it has a whole lot less miles on the odometer. I like the way a vehicle drives if it has tires that are larger than they should be and the way it looks. Mexicans like to put on tires that are too small. A lot of used vehicles you buy with tires that are too small they did it cuz the price of the tires was cheaper. My 1970s cars run much better on non ethanol fuel and I'm not constantly replacing the fuel pumps the ethanol destroys the inside of the metal gas tank and the rubber dyer for him in the mechanical fuel pump when I switch to non ethanol the tanks had no internal rust anymore and the fuel pumps began to not destroy themselves at every 12 months. The car was designed to run on non ethanol gas. A lot of engine fires in small cars built before 2004 are attributed to ethanol gas rusting out the fuel system parts on the engine causing leaks. The metal fuel line injectors the ethanol attacks and destroys.

General Motors made these older cars to purposelly run worse power on E85/ethanol by programming the ECU to retard ignition timing despite being flexfuel vehicle. John Brackett exposed this in pump the movie(2014) by Josh Tickell.
