Super impressive. I did my first ever race the same race that day and completed it in 1:07:07. I struggled going up the mountain as It took me 16/17 minutes to get up to the 4 foot wall. Any tips or suggestions for running up hill?
@jonathanbouchard1242616 күн бұрын
@trevorconlon6466 I recommend you need to train for specificity. To run uphill efficiently, you need to get your body used to it. Flat running doesn't translate well to hill running. Try incorporating Hill Sprints and slower long runs on very hilly terrain. I also like to walk on treadmill with 15-degree incline with ankle weights and weighed vest to get the legs stronger with the uphill.

Hey John, Lauren here (my son has taken over my KZbin account). Firstly, thanks so much for posting this, super informative. I’m just getting into competitive Spartan racing this year. Any tips for training elevation when you don’t live near any ski hills? It’s been a challenge for me to find adequate elevation. I can drive 30 mins to get some nice “rolling hills” type trails with around 20-30m per km elevation, but no ski hills nearby or anything with long ascents. I do have some short steep hills nearby which work good for hill sprint intervals.
@jonathanbouchard124262 ай бұрын
That's amazing. Competitive Spartan Races are great! You can really push yourself to the best of your ability. To train for hills in your cased you have some steady hills on the roads near where you live? During the winter months I can't use the ski hills for obvious reason, I will put a 10lbs weighed vest and run up and down the staircase in my house for a set period of time e.g 30 mins. Is it boring ? Yes! Is it effective? Yes. Make high incline treadmill, your best friend. Run at max incline start at 5-10 mins, my incline has a rolling hill program that's always an option. I like to be able to run 45 mins straight at max incline, and keep in mind the speed is slow, but I train to run longer without walking.
@MateoAGRoblox2 ай бұрын
@@jonathanbouchard12426 awesome thanks for the tips. The staircase at home is definitely doable. I’ve also hacked my treadmill by adding a 4” wood block to elevate the front, so I can get it up to closer to 20% elevation now which I’ve been using to power walk/short sprints but wasn’t really sure how effective it was. I guess that will be my go to in winter :)
@jonathanbouchard124262 ай бұрын
@MateoAGRoblox once it's not challenging enough, add ankle weights and a light weighed vest. The more we struggle with training, the easier race day will be!

I've never been able to do Olympus, even when they had the wood surface a few years ago. That new plastic surface on Olympus, the Box and Stairway to Sparta is so slippery! I don't even try that obstacle anymore. I go straight for the penalty loop so I don't waste too much time. I'm so happy that they got rid of those f'ing burpees! Minute 22 is Beater, not Bender. Haha! I've gotten them mixed up before. There was seriously a 10' wall?!! DANG! You made it look easy! Nice work! I love your attitude, your motivation, your willingness to give advice to others and for thanking the volunteers (I have volunteered many times and it is much appreciated). Much respect for you Ultra athletes. Beast is my max, but next month I'm doing the Utah Trifecta.
@jonathanbouchard124264 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for your feedback ! Same here, Olympus is unfortunately a lost cause... even building one would prove pointless since it would be made of wood. These events couldn't happen if it weren't for all the volunteers, I definitely try to thank them all on the way. I used to think like you that an Ultra was crazy, but on just my second ultra I got 1st place in my AG, it ain't that bad with proper training. Keep racing, and don't be afraid to try an ultra!
