Guess what... Outside Bahia lots of Acarajé made in Brazil are not authentic. And even in Bahia there are people who make blank or red dough. With or without caruru. And worse: lots of people eat it ON A PLATE, with knife and fork! Now THIS IS DISRESPECTFUL!!! Those who are claiming this video is disrespectful should be aware of that! We should feel honoured that thank to the internet our country has been appreciated for a lot more than soccer, Carnival or beaches. Lots of foreigners are making coxinha, pão de queijo, feijoada and pastel. Ok, this recipe has its weakness, but this is exactly how a food becomes internationally known. Americans can make their so-so acarajé, enjoy it, then travel to Brazil and enjoy even more the original one. Why not? Isn't this the exact way Italian dishes work around the globe? Brazilians should even be aware that food from Bahia has extremely exotic taste, even for people from other states of Brazil. Maybe the palm oil and the original recipe would be a turn off for most people. There's no problem to enjoy a slightly changed traditional food, with ingredients adapted to the country where it's done. Have you forgot how we changed the stroganoff? Even so, stroganoff is much more famous in Brazil rather than in Russia itself! And I know no Brazilian who claims to prefer the original version instead of our own. This is how cooking works: recipes keep changing all the time.

You did not mention the deep african influence in the Brazilian culture and particularly in this dish.

Went to their web site and found they pay $16.00 per 100 lbs hulled. Does that even equate to minimum wage after costs of getting the product to them? Then retail pricing 8.97 for 12 oz shelled at Walmart. Granted there is weight loss from shelling, but not that significant. Someone is getting rich off of others. 😮 Glad we have access to a tree.

Dang you're right that isn't much. Now they are paying the farmers who host the collection sites and have one of their machines on site taking the huls off and paying the customers who bring them in. And you're right, the shells reduce a lot of the weight and the drying, but they're also selling the shells. I would assume for sandblasting material and other uses. People don't do it as a source of income, but elderly couples do it for extra money to pay for their prescriptions (referring to the couple who collected mine the last two years) and non-profit and church groups will collect them to raise money as a fundraiser. It's definitely a fun, relaxing way to spend time with family and friends out in nature and feeling like you're being productive seeing the walnuts get cleaned up off the ground.

@@livenfree Couldn't agree more on family time cleaning them up and fund raisers etc. But a little more could be paid I would think. I don't even know why I would think that being the rich always take advantage of the non rich.

ASF or african swine fever (here in the Philippines) like (COVID19 for humans) is here to attack pigs. Philippine government especially the Department of Agriculture can't do anything but import more pork from China or anywhere else. Importation made the government officials richer.

If finding this video was a joy, touring the mill was even better! Many thanks to Clyde and Janet for keeping this bit of history operating for the curious to see! It would be fascinating even if it did NOT involve my own family history. I'm forever grateful to the Union Army for protecting this mill during the Civil War, to Bill Cameron for restoring it in the 1970s, and to the Beals for preserving it to the present day! It is this whole series of serindipitous events that allows me to enjoy a visit to a mill my family built and operated, still operable 175 years later!

What a joy to find this video! I'm planning a trip to Springfield to visit relatives. I started searching google, trying to find the location of the old Likins Milling Company, where our ancestors operated a mill. I expected to find the mill foundation, at best. Instead, I found that the mill has been restored, operates, and tours are available! My thanks to the Beals for restoring a piece of my family history!
