I tell my students to call me out because: A. I'm not perfect. B. It gets them to listen even if it's to find my mistakes. C. It teaches accountability. D. It shows that I don't place myself above them, which makes me more approachable.

Its a problematic solution, so it remains a problem regardless of the logic you apply to it. But largely correct

Whouldnt asking the student, why they hate you and what you could change to mitigate that (in the bounds of possibility ofc) be a better option?
@purplepanther3585

As a recent student, students will hate anything lol, it’s most likely not the teachers fault
@ghdwk5596
@ghdwk5596 Ай бұрын
@@purplepanther3585 I know, I'm a recent student as well, but that might make them realise that, whatever they hate the teacher for is not in the teachers control and the helpful approach might make the students see the teacher as someone helpful rather than an antagonist
@Thestoicstallion

@@ghdwk5596people who go around saying I hate you, don’t have much self awareness to begin with. Especially if you say it to someone who isn’t connected with your personal life.
@ghdwk5596
@ghdwk5596 Ай бұрын
@@Thestoicstallion yeah, but specifically asking why they hate you, the answer, although often times not very helpful, might either give insight on their background, or make them, at least for a short moment, ask themselves why they'd say they hate you

bad advice. learn conflict resolution instead of appeasing students by belittling yourself like come on how sad.

What if you teach an elective like Spanish/French? I’ve tried many different ways of showing them how learning a different language is beneficial but they’re still not interested. 😢 maybe incorporating more games and movement/brain breaks ?

Brian, this is an excellent strategy! I am going to attempt the question challenge today to see how well I can do. As a veteran with only a year and a half now of teaching experience I can often find myself thinking the same thing about time and why did I waste it just now on an argumentative conversation with a kid that obviously is expressing the symptom of issues at home. I feel like this is a great opportunity to improve my teaching and my ability to control my veteran impulses to demand control and respect through firmness.

Thank you! I’ve tried to explain the difference so many times to people. People lack the patience (discipline) required to teach discipline. It’s more expedient to use punishment to exert control instead of consistent accountability and boundaries to encourage self-control.

Technically, a punishment is anything that reduces a behaviour.
