It is possible to have veggies / crop / livestock and some fruits. I mean i come from a family of farmers. But the thing is that the veggies were limited and usually just for us and neighbors who want to buy some, fruits were max apples and some bereies which needed little care. Main was animals and crops. But for this we needed our family to work on it and a helper. Means ur kids gonna work, your grandparents work, your parents work, you work. Everyone works. There are times where u can have a day off or do smth for yourself but for this you need good planning skills. And limit your wishes and wants for that special occasion. Its very hard.

Hi! I’m curious about how and where you learned to get your roosters ready for eating (the gentlest way I can word it, haha!) and how to get over the fear of ending a life?
@Slowsteading3 күн бұрын
Hey there! I just watched a couple KZbin videos then went for it 👌☺️ As for getting over the fear of ending of life, I agree that it's not easy at all. There's no easy way around it other than facing it head on. I would be lying if I said it didn't get my heart racing every time (and not in a good way). But ultimately if we choose to eat meat we are already taking a life. The funny thing is that it begins to resemble food very quickly, as soon as the feathers are off. And the weight of doing the deed doesn't last either. It's just a reminder that we're all animals on this planet after all 😅

Not to be weird, but what kind of person has the ability to just purchase and create an entire homestead in a year, fancy camera equipment and then up and quit and fly and move to Japan a year later, while renting out their home? Who is actually bank rolling this? Most of their videos haven't broken 10k views for advertising and etc, If they were just farming for a year and working so hard on the land - where did money for Japan come from? All the money to afford an international move? A new international home? Passports? Furniture? It's giving rich people who are cosplaying farmers

Most of the “homesteaders” around us in middle Tennessee are transplants from California. No shade. But, It’s a mystery to them why one of their neighbors (who grew up caring for livestock, doing farm chores, and having all of the skills to run a farm) drives 45 minutes each way to work at the GM plant. It’s not an easy way to make a good living. My humble advice is, if you take anything away from all of the Joel Salatin videos, you can make money in any chosen field (pun intended) if you’re a great salesman. ✌🏻

According to some polls, up to 89% of Americans eat meat, most of it likely coming from large factory farms with horrendous living conditions. So why do you take issue with one family trying to raise animals in an ethical, compassionate, caring way?
@DemonDestroyer717 күн бұрын
@@Slowsteading The outdated polls. Veganism will win in the end, and people are becoming vegan everyday once they found out the real truth behind those closed doors of the kill floors. You are on the wrong side of history. The future is cruelty free. Slaughterhouses will be history.

I respect where you're coming from. But ultimately food has to come from somewhere, and if I choose to eat meat (which is a choice) I'm happy to know that the animals were raised with nothing but compassion and care. One bad day does not negate all that 😅
@Take_Your_Time_I_Can_Wait21 күн бұрын
@ Yes, all food has to come from somewhere. Keyword though being food. Animals do not have to be food. There are plenty of complete plant based protein options out there, so it’s not a requirement or necessary to eat them. There is the choice to be a meat eater, yes, people make that choice for themselves, the problem is that they forget they’re making that choice for the animal as well.
@allisoncollins350220 күн бұрын
@Take_Your_Time_I_Can_Wait when people choose to eat meat, this is the most ethical way to do it. The reality is, most people are always going to eat meat . The fact is that this is a whole lot better than buying from a factory farm. It's not perfect, but it's as close as you can realistically get to it. Trust me, I've been vegetarian for an entire decade (which was my own personal choice) because this type of farming where you can ensure a good quality of life isn't an option for me.

We're in the US and have a flock of laying hens + pullets and chicks from them. We're doing a small breeding project to get some green and blue eggs. I'd love to raise meat birds, but we don't have enough space right now. You're lucky the hawks didn't get any of yours. So plump and not very agile. One my my Olive Egger pullets jumped on my leg today when I was squatting, asking for cuddles, just like yours did. Your homestead is so bucolic and I love your Scandinavian style black and white home with the large windows.
@Slowsteading21 күн бұрын
That sounds like a beautiful flock, with the makings of a stunning rainbow egg mix in the works 👌 We've purchased pullets before and found that they just aren't as comfortable with us and personable as the birds raised from chicks, it sounds-those chicken snuggles really are worth it! The meat birds do require a bit more space, but are surprisingly low maintenance. It's worth a try if you ever do find the space!

You don’t need to kill any animal in homestead! So many families raising their children in loving animal friendly homestead lifestyles and the children learning how to love and respect animals instead of killing them while eating a healthy plant based diet. Seeing the footage of your baby bunnies and knowing you will teach your children to kill them is horrific to watch!
@Slowsteading21 күн бұрын
I totally respect that perspective, but this is the choice we have made. I don't have rice paddies, nor grain fields, so small livestock like chickens and rabbits provide a compact and nutrient dense food source for my family. A modern day vegan diet depends heavily on commercial monocropping in distant growing regions, which is the opposite of what we are striving for here. All of our animals are raised with nothing but care and respect. And our children have nothing but respect for them (and all food) by being able to come face to face with it. It's a lot more powerful teacher than opening shrinkwrapped packs of greenwashed cookies. 🤷🏻♂️
