Still can't believe EMTs can do injections now, when j went through in 2019 we couldn't do them we did lots of skills and way more then the old heads. But injections we didn't do, our scope is evolving quite quickly

Back in 1970 when I started on the ambulance with Schaefer Ambulance in LA, all you needed was an advanced 1st Aid Card issued by the American Red Cross. I got mine at the back office at Schaefer after filling out my application and spending about four hours learning CPR, splinting, bandaging and administering O2 and operating the Stephens Resuscitator. Most everything else was on job training. I was designated a driver and was immediately sent to the then Riverside International Raceway's School for high performance driving to learn how to properly drive Code 3 in LA traffic. EMT school was still about 2 years in the future and the paramedic program in LA was experimental in the LA County Fire Department and the LA CITY Fire Department. I worked 24 hours on and 24 hours off and then every 3rd or 4th shift, it was 48 hours on and 48 off. It was not a great paying job as I averaged between $800-900 a month in 1970 dollars when minimum wage was $1.60 per hour. Depending on what station I was working, we ran anywhere from 12 to 20 calls per 24 hour shift. At the end of a shift, all you wanted to do was rest. In the Watts, Willowbrook and Compton areas, you could expect to run 15 to 20 calls and run the full 24 hours. We were supposed to get down time but that seldom happened. Most of the calls in that area were hotshot calls such as shootings, accidents, overdoses, gang fights... well you get the idea. The ambulances stationed within LA CITY handled the easier transfer calls as LA CITY had their own ambulances with private ambulances handling the nursing home calls and hospital to home calls. After becoming a policeman in 1972, I still worked part time on the ambulance and saw many changes. The Cadillac ambulance went to the wayside because of the new DOT requirements regarding height requirements. The high top Cadillac was still used until about 1980. Those were the days where you learned to improvise. The paramedic programs were so abused by people wanting to go to the hospital and didn't have the cab fare. Was in a movie and one of the guys I worked with was the technical advisor on the movie Mother, Jugs and Speed with Bill Cosby and Raquel Welch. Believe it or not, it was pretty accurate for ambulances in LA. Ambulance crews did carry guns as I know three guys shot on the ambulance in LA. As a cop I was allowed to carry but I knew quite a few guys who carried snub nose 38s. Police knew they did and turned a blind eye to it in the rough areas.

Superior Ambulance has certainly grown. I remember in 1970 I worked for Schaefer Ambulance in LA and Walt Schaefer had many EAP-EMS contracts in LA, Orange, San Diego and Imperial Counties with more than 100 rigs working the streets in the many cities and unincorporated areas in Southern California. For years, he was the largest ambulance service. Schaefer owned his ambulance service and ran it. Walt Schaefer was a man of his word and became a friend as well. I like to see independent and family owned ambulance services because of the personal touches. If you gave Schaefer your best and were honest, he would do for you as an employee. So as a family owned business it's good to see such an expansion and not some big impersonal corporation being successful. Even today in my 70s, I still miss blowing my siren and some of the exciting times I had in the 1970s.

I worked on the ambulance in LA for Schaefer in the very early 70s. I also became a policeman for one of smaller cities adjacent to LA. I got to see many things on the ambulance and enjoyed working in the area. I became friends with Walt Schaefer and he let me work part time for him on my days off from the city. During that time in the 70s, Schaefer had a little over 100 ambulances in service in LA, Orange, San Diego and Imperial Counties. I also heard of Superior Ambulance in the Chicago area and Shephard Ambulance in Seattle. The Superior Coach Company of Lima Ohio built great ambulances on Cadillac chassis and then on GMC & Chevy chassis. I often think of some of the famous calls I have been on as I worked in East LA, South Central LA, Hollywood and West Hollywood. There were some sad and fond memories for me during my ambulance days from '70 to '80. I guess Superior Ambulance Service is one of the larger private ambulance services in the country now besides AMR.

I find it interesting about American EMS providers and how they work. Sometime in the future perhaps do a exchange experience to see how UK EMT work differs.
