So how did they empty the reservoir if the drain was clogged? And how do other reservoirs deal with this situation or is the grated drain unique in both design and problems?

Menzi Muck get a translator to check your video. It's "extremely steep slope" and muck (pun intended) drains "THROUGH" the grate not "OVER" it. Otherwise nice video.
