So cute! 2022 U.S. Childhood Agricultural Injuries Fact Sheet released Youth worker fatalities in agriculture exceed all other industries combined, according to the 2022 Childhood Agricultural Injuries Fact Sheet published by the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety. The fact sheet data includes children/youth under 18 from 2001-2021. About every three days, a child dies in an agriculture-related incident, and each day, at least 33 children are seriously injured, said Marsha Salzwedel, Ed.D., project scientist and agricultural youth safety specialist at the NIOSH-funded National Children’s Center, part of the National Farm Medicine Center, Marshfield Clinic Research Institute. “We hope this fact sheet helps everyone understand the severity of the problem,” Salzwedel said. Leading reported sources of fatalities involved transportation (47%), which includes tractors and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and contact with machinery (20 percent) such as being pinned between a skid steer’s lift arms and frame. Other notable statistics on injuries among youth: Youth under age 16 have 12 times the risk of ATV injuries (both fatal and non-fatal) compared to adults. From 2001 to 2015, 48 percent of all fatal occupational injuries to young workers occurred in agriculture. There are over four times more actual occupational injuries than are reported. As many as 88 percent of agricultural injuries and illnesses are not captured by traditional surveillance methods. Bryan Weichelt, Ph.D., associate research scientist, led compilation of the fact sheet, alongside colleague, Rick Burke, M.P.H. “There is no central database on childhood agricultural injuries in the U.S.,” Weichelt said. “In putting together this fact sheet we drew upon the best available data from a variety of sources.”

I could see your concern there. I’m sure it makes it a bit worse in that spot but to be honest the cord is so small as well as flat so to be honest it’s not enough to really cause any concern in my opinion. I’ve never even seen any moisture or condensation where the wire enters.

Michael, am looking to try a small batch of freedom rangers but also don’t feel like tackling the processing of them myself on my first attempt. Roughly, how much is it to take to get them processed? Does it nearly offset the money you saved during the raising process?
@mikestrahl
@mikestrahl 29 күн бұрын
Hey! So there are a ton of variables to consider when doing your first batch. First understand you will lose money and the numbers will not make sense when getting started. All of the start up cost to buy equipment and build structures up front will be there. Freedom rangers are great for the heartiness but they are 12 week grow out & you need to make sure your processor will take them. The processors I use will only do Cornish or white rangers. Not reds. When it comes to processing cost I don’t have the cost breakdown in front of me but it’s usually around $1000 to have 200 done to give you an idea. They are all vacuum sealed. I generally have 40 or so done whole and the rest are parted out. It gets cheaper and starts to make more sense the more batches you do in a year & when you do a higher quantity. I raise white rangers now. I have less mortality & it’s still an 8 week bird. If you are raising to just feed your family it’ll always be more expensive when you run the numbers. The trade off is meat you raised, know how it was raised, and the pride of raising your own food. Hope that helps! 😁

Hey! It makes a bit trickier to get to the release tabs but I usually just use a small screw drive or something like that to push on the spot where the tabs are. That’s been my concern since I built. To be honest after 2 seasons and a ton of wind I haven’t had any issues yet. We just just lost half our roof and a couple trees a few weeks ago. My shelters have all been fine though. I’m sure someday this thing might take flight though if the right gust catches it
@raycecil4643
@raycecil4643 Ай бұрын
@@mikestrahl Just keep the open end facing away from the prevailing wind direction. I built a similar chicken tractor, and had no issues. I gave one to a neighbor who lives in the valley a mile down the hill and it flipped on him letting all his chickens out one night. He didn't have it more than a couple weeks. Terrain and natural wind blockage is important. I have a hollar and hill top in Kentucky, and lots of wind protection from trees. My neighnor down the road not as much.
@mikestrahl
@mikestrahl Ай бұрын
That’s probably a good reason I have very few problems. I keep all of my doorways facing east. My big chicken tractor faces all directions depending on where I am in the field. If I know I have a big wind coming I have anchors I set with my drill that I can have set in 15 minutes. We are extremely flat with barely any trees. We get wind all the time. Would love to one day have a rolling piece of property a little further south!

@@mikestrahl We are 98% tree cover here. Great foraging for silvopasture pigs. My issue is the steepness in some spots is a little dangerous. Im debating on how to get going, making everything mobile, or having a more captive system that relies on grain feeding....

Mowing a big mower is not safe for children.
@mikestrahl
@mikestrahl 2 ай бұрын
I strongly disagree. Yes it depends on a lot of factors. Property type being one. We are flat with no nearby water. The individuals maturity is another. This girl picks up on things fast. The teacher being another. If you feel unsafe doing so I respect your decision. I’ve been running this equipment & much larger for over 20 years. I know the in & outs. I never leave her alone while she is out there. Her brother knows he is not allowed anywhere near her while she is operating equipment. It’s funny because she pretty dang good running my tractor for me as well. In fact better than some of the adults I work with daily for that matter.
