I noticed when I became much faster and lighter I became terrible at hills. 24 minute 5k I did not feel the hills but sub 20 they were mountains making times 50 seconds slower. Very disappointing

Also: 2. Appreciate the weather, it won't be nice outside for much longer 3. Look for a treadmill so you don't have to run in the 30 degree weather for the winter 4. For cross country runners: Don't eat the halloween candy 2 days out from Districts

Sports Science has come a long way, since I was a high schooler in the early 1970s. Back then, being a quarter miler, the 800 (actually 880) was like the 3000 meters. There really was no strategy taught, which is why I couldn't break 51 seconds, to save my life. In my senior year, a new assistant coach came, asked me my time and looked incredulously at me. He had me run a 220, at the next meet, and told me to go flat out. He then had me run "fartleks", until I could run a 220 under 26 seconds, no matter how tired I was. He had me run .75 seconds slower than my fastest 220, for the first half of the race and I eventually ran high 48 seconds. Afterwards, his first words were that I should have been a half-miler. The same strategy can be used for the 800, just double the "recipe". You have to find your own tolerances about what your splits are; in the final analysis, the only opponent you need to be concerned with is the clock.

I think a big thing is form. I’ve noticed that when I have good form I can go the same speed and still feel bouncy and quick while normally I’d feel sluggish and tired. If you drive your knees kick your heels to you butt put force into the ground and keep a quick snappy cadence you’ll be surprised at how much easier your race paces will feel and who knows maybe you can sneak in a lil PR if you feel good

Honestly, because it’s in spring, training before the year helps. While pacing myself for a 2 mile I can run a 8 minute mile with ease, but at the start of spring with no training that’s what a singular mile is for me.

The conventional excuse is that Cross Country is typically considered a cool/cold weather sport but I think this is weak reasoning since there are plenty of "winter" sports competed in the Summer Olympics.
@Runnersreview9 ай бұрын
The first two laps are just to get set into positions. Go out fast, but worry about just staying either on pace for your time, or with the people that are your pace or a little faster. The third lap is what makes a miler; run it hard, maybe not all out, but start you kick and go really fast. The whole final lap should be all out, and the last 200 should be a sprint if n or sprinting already.

Hey guys, so I’m a freshman. Cross Country just ended and coach wants us to take at least 2 weeks off from running. Winter track starts soon, and I want to start preparing for my events to run as fast as possible. (Mostly the 800 and 1600) any tips on how to improve on my 2 weeks off from running?

fucking virtue signalling. if you really care about the cause, why not donate money silently. why do you have to make a spectacle out of it, for everyone to see? Oh, because then nobody would see what a great person you are. Why not next time run wearing a mother theresa costume, to get even more attention. disgusting ego driven BS...

I was told that you shouldn’t sprint at the start of the race because everyone who does is wasting more energy than they need to and you’ll most likely end up passing some of them after awhile.

I started running the 3200 in 6th grade, the best time I got that year was a 11:43 at state. My 7th grade track season I did not improve much, but my best time that year ended up being a 11:10. This year during my cross county season I just broke 11 and got a 10:30🎉Which was my goal for the season.

I always went hard for first 30-50 meters as I wanted to be close to guys with better leg speed. Focus was form and rhythm for the next 400 only doing extra effort if I needed to get by someone dropping off the pace. Last 300 is where the real racing starts. On occasion I would start my final drive there but against a tough field, the next 100 is about position with slight increase in effort to pick my spot. At 150 to go, my main focus other than form, rhythm and relaxing was to prepare for the gear change coming off the turn. I'm tired at this point but I know I can make the gear change but I can only accelerate for 20-30 meters and then I have to go back to form and staying quick. Head down, elbows driving back and knees lifting. Practice the last 150 in training as you may want to wait for 80 to go or move a little earlier but once you do move, stay tall, slight lean forward and focus 10 meters past the finish. Chin relaxed and let the fingers bounce on the last stretch. Focusing on body mechanics will keep negative thoughts out of your mind.
