I think the Final Agnai Kai song using the theme of the cross roads and Zuko dealing with his destiny in a solidified way also represent Azula. Both characters have chosen their path, their destiny. They have been set on this path of destruction, of fighting each other, of tragedy. They have been set in their ways and there was no way of circumventing this tragic fight. That is why the theme's as a resolution is so somber. It was the destiny Zuko needed to do but that does not mean it is a triumphant one. It is the child that never escaped the father's abuse ow threatening the world needing to be stopped the child who learned from and escaped the father's abuse. It isn't her fault (entirely), she was put on this path by her father and was never taught how to really deal with the world in any other way. It is so tragic that the only one who can stop her is her brother. They really mastered the music by making it so somber while still having that sense of finality and sturdiness.

This might be insane to admit, but when I was a kid, I didn’t understand why ppl cared so much about music until I heard the music of ATLA. The ATLA soundtrack was my gateway to falling in love with instrumental and classical and contemporary classical music. Now I’m normal and I listen to rock and i appreciate all sorts of genres, but ATLA was my first eye opening “music is spiritual, music is everything” moment. I used to need the ATLA soundtrack for me to sleep without nightmares.

the Avatar’s love leitmotif is in the scene with Zuko and Iroh, because it was their search for Aang, their story with Aang, which allowed both of them to heal from their past trauma. Iroh healed from the trauma of losing his son by managing to save Zuko from the evil of the Fire Nation. And Zuko saved himself from the destiny forced upon him and found his own. Both helped each other. Through thick and thin. Though the good, the bad, and the ugly. This mirrors how Aang had his friend beside him to help him through his most daunting choices, through the destiny imposed on him and the one he chose instead.

Alright. So first of all. I am so, so sorry for not commenting these past few months, even when I finished watching this video. I didn't really know what to say, but now upon rewatch, I tried to write down everything you said and to underline specific things that stood out to me. I still feel like I can't give you a very well put together comment, especially since I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to music, though I am intrigued to learn about it. I do love to learn about history and all its facets and faces however and I have to say I am so glad you said what you said about the Minstrel and didn't dismiss anything, good or bad. People are very quick to dismiss things or to glorify things out of proportion, which honestly makes me sad. I am by no means a professional historian, I simply learn history on my leisure and there's a lot to learn about it, which means things are easy to forget or to accidentally overlook. Still, one should try to carefully examine every aspect of a certain historical event and ponder what it means in detail as well as in the grander picture. It sounds to me like Over the Garden feels “that way”, due to a combination of reasons. Their nods to early animations, the artstyle, the way the story happens, the actions and interactions of the characters and the musical score. The simple fact that it's inspired by music that was in turn inspired itself by other musics and that all of these different types of musics came together to change into a new form of music. It has always been said that the United States is a melting pot, which seems to be also true for its music. Music, old music, the type of music played in Over the Garden Wall, the type of music you'd hear at a campfire is all cozy and warm. So Over the Garden Wall and these things have in common the feelings the faraway land + Domesticity and The simple life + Missing home have in common. It's simple, it's steady. It's warm, cozy and soft. Like the cottagecore aesthetic, like sitting at a campfire, like listening to old music. It's like a momentary anchor in time where you can focus on the moment and not worry too much about tomorrow. The North and South knew, as you said, that things couldn't go on as they used to. That regardless of who'd win the Civil War, things would be different, which means it must have been a very unsteady and uncertain time for both sides in various ways, so it's hardly a wonder why the music was felt and liked by both sides. Society has become very fast paced, everyone's running on a clock and many people are unhappy. So finding a tiny steady island to stand on in the middle of a raging ocean gives some form of security and comfort. Now I understand more, I think, why I have always explained to others that in the sea of content, Over the Garden Wall always felt to me like a little still, cozy pond. It's small and the waters are calm and you can sit beside it and relax as you watch the frogs sit on those leaves or on that ship playing their musical ensemble. xD So much happens all the time in politics and the future that I have even figured that I find comfort in even the darkest of chapters in history, because it's already over. The page is written. It's steady and unwavering now. A place to escape to when you're feeling like you're about to join Wirt in feeling like a boat upon a winding river that's twisting toward an endless black sea. There's comfort in being able to hold someone's hand as an anchor to ground yourself, yet it's okay to let go of that hand and dip your toes into unknown waters as well, as scary as it can be. You can always go back to the little pond. It will always be there. Well in the end what I want to say is. Beautifully put together video. You put a lot of heart and research into it and I felt and feel quite moved watching it ❤️ I actually want to go sit down and rewatch Over the Garden Wall now haha. I have not checked out everything you mentioned in your video yet, but I will. I will also read those books, because you have made me curious. I truly wish I could write much more and put my thoughts together in this comment a lot better than I did I fear. You're very passionate clearly and that's wonderful, I wish I could contribute more too. Your two videos are absolutely beautiful pearls within the internet and I am very eager to see more, regardless of how long it takes. I'll rewatch your videos, they're very comfortably put together. I don't know how to say it, but they're very… tasty? Like a good, fancy meal. I'll certainly be sharing this video of yours with other people yet again! ^^ Lastly… have you seen the video uploaded by Demighoul? It's titled “For Sara (Over the Garden Wall)” and it's a collection of the poems Wirt had on that tape in the show. It's very nice, I think. Perhaps worth checking out too, if you haven't seen it. Thank you for this video. I liked and appreciated it a lot. :)

DUDE! Right!??? There is just such care given to every second of this show, even beyond speaking only musically. Looking at the music alone should be an indication of how much care was given to all the other aspects if the show. But yeah, I was losing my mind holding all this info my brain when I was discovering it. I will say though, I'm not fully convinced that the composers were doing this on purpose, since this is the only instance of this I found, and it's so subtle. But I heard it put once, that it doesn't matter if it was intentionally or not, because what it does is show that music has the capability to tell story in this incredibly intricate way, and to me... that's cool enough :)

The Agni Kai scene gets even better. When Zuko challenges Azula to use her lightning, it starts with strong, but spaced out percussions, then amped up, super fast to electrifying strings to be followed with extremely somber music as Zuko sacrifices himself to save Katara. And then sounds like nails on glass as Azula runs amok. When Katara saves Zuko, his “sound” comes back at its strongest, and it sounds like a small symphony. Azula’s sounds from her fierce music to her lonely music, and her sad music all fluctuate in the span of a few seconds demonstrating her chaotic fluctuation in emotions as she has finally lost everything! kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5unZoqba51padkfeature=shared

Great freakin job! You have a natural knack for video essays and a keener eye than most. Keep doing more please! I’m curious on your opinion on the music in Legend of Korra, which is one of the few things I think they actually did just as well if not better than ATLA (not saying it’s bad, just that ATLA is better in most ways) and also your opinion on the new live action ATLA. I think you’d have a lot of great notes on what they could do to improve, and one huge thing is better implementation of the music!

Zuko and Iroh never fail to make me cry. Suggestion for the Avatar’s love leitmotif: I’m wondering if this is not only a reconciliation between Zuko and Iroh, but between Zuko’s warring forefathers, Sozin and Roku. Iroh to me has always embodied the ideals of Roku, while Zuko has tried to live up to Sozin. So in this scene. It’s the *avatar’s love*, yes, but it’s not *Aang’s* love.
