Hi @tnlpottery4294 - is it possible to do the same white a already glazed mug? and can you /do you need to re-glazed the mug/cup ?
@tnlpottery429422 күн бұрын
Yes you can do this with a glazed cup and you can add glaze and re-fire. Although remember it does take longer for the glaze to dry at that point.

@@micheledickey4066 I am so sorry that I have not been so active. We actually have spent the summer having a couple vacations and preparing to do a complete remodel on our house. I honestly have not don’t much pottery this summer. But I am hoping things slow down enough soon for me to get back in the studio before I start a fall adult workshop class. I do love working with kids and seeing their imagination. It’s so unique and out of the box. As we get older I believe we have a harder time looking out of the box. So being around kids helps me to see all kinds of potential. And I love when they recognize me outside of the classroom too. That means the world to me because I know I made an impression.

I had the exact same idea of using coloring book images on my pottery!! Great carving!! Love the mugs!! May I ask why you use the applicator bottle instead of brushing the glaze on and wiping back??
@tnlpottery42945 ай бұрын
Great minds do think alike. I use the applicator to get a thicker coat of the UG in the carvings so I don’t have to paint multiple times to get the thickness I want. That way the UG is not so transparent. I don’t know if that’s the right way, but it works for me.
@tnlpottery42945 ай бұрын
I’m not great at drawing(really bad), so I use graphics and either carbon copy them on bisque or trace them on leather hard clay when I want to carve. This one I free handed from looking at the picture. I can sometimes freehand, but it doesn’t always come out the greatest.

Wow these are soo pretty! Awsome job!! I love the hands sooo much. I may have to do this with my husbands second grade class. Can you tell me what you learned doing these classes? How did you keep the clay hands with the fingers curled in.
@tnlpottery42946 ай бұрын
Because these were kindergarten and 1st grade I shaped them, but a 2nd grade class can shape themselves I would think. I used a toilet paper roll to hang the finger down will it began to harden up a little. Then after they hardened enough to stand up, I made sure the fingers were curled enough for the hand to sit flat on the bottom and the fingers up. With glazing, I find all grades have a hard time not getting the glaze on the bottom, so I do spend some time wiping back so they don’t stick to the kiln shelf.

When doing the bubble glazing you have to use a soap that doesn’t have any moisturizer or lotion etc in it. A lot of people use blue dawn dish soap. I absolutely love the swirly glazes on the crosses! Your bowl is absolutely gorgeous!!! Just an fyi. When you get toward the bottom of a crystal glaze open your new jar and add the crystals. lol. @@tnlpottery4294 You are so very welcome. Yeah definitely need a dark underglaze. Keep track of how much water vs underglaze you use so you know when you have the right amounts. Is there a reason you put the white underglaze on the pot first? The white is going to mix with the underglaze and make it more dull.

To help you remember glazes and combos, number your pieces and keep a written list. I make generic drawings of a mugs, bowls, plates etc. and make photocopies. I record the number, glazes/combos and approximately where and how I applied them. That way, when magic happens in the kiln.... you know exactly what you did! Good luck, girl!
