So many memories of this event at times when most countries still had strict controls. Doing all the maps with the car owner. Meeting world famous competitors. Months of preparation. Some works had already driven the route but most had not. Being a privateer Having to carry all spares which had to be checked in at each border. Being shot at by police as we were running late and could not stop at road works. Being fined for speeding by corrupt police who were later jailed. Driving past guarded workers in fields who were not allowed to watch these mad people in cars. So many memories to put with all my other motorsports memories. Thank you for bringing them back.

I can remember when travelling on a motorway looked like that but most cars back then would struggle to keep going all day at 70mph my 1.6 diesel Astra has no trouble it is just going at 200.100 rpm at 70mph in sixth but the best thing is that it is done 80 mpg

Fantastic memories Chris, we lived in Wembley so i remember being taken along to this at 7 years old, i've watched and enjoyed this a few times over the years, i vividly remember walking around the paddock seeing the Mk 1 Escorts with the unusual roof to strut external bars, also a Rolls Royce and thinking, unusual! and the 4 door Conroy Mtrs mini, and all the matt black bonnets, also the Rosemary Smith Maxi, thinking how colorful with the orange stripes in a paddock of mainly white cars. We followed the convoy away from the Stadium and into London, at least as far as Westminster Bridge, we even pulled up alongside Roger Clark at a set of traffic lights, and Dad pretended to goad him into a burn-up, edging forward in his Jag, much to Roger's amusement i seem to also remember. Wishful thinking, but at 4.21 there's an elevated shot with a grey Jaguar S Type (ours was a 420) reversing into a parking space, it struck me that was the sort of thing Dad was prone to do, deciding where he was going to park, even if it wasn't a proper space, who knows, thanks again for posting

Three Bolivian drivers participated in this rally, with a BMW num. 29 (William Bendeck, Diether Hubner and Burgos.) They alone did everything (drivers and mechanics). They entered the Mexico stadium in fourth place, only in the final classification it was in the 13th. In Europe they were lost for more than an hour. What a memorable race, never again was one like it.

@Chris Taylor : my inlaw travelled all of south america with a convertible 15CV Traction Citroen (only 3 in the world!) . He met the local guy who bought Citroen DS21 #12 (neyret/terramorsi) after its retirement in the London Mexico 70 race, and bought it back from him, got the car slightly repaired, and shipped it to Mexico in 2016, to "finish the race", some ... 48 years after starting it at Wembley! The car's now ready for the 50th anniversary at Gaydon. We're looking for some material, to complete a written doc about the race, coming along with the car itself, plus a family documentary of the 1st trip in south america. I'd really love to get in touch with you, to see if we can achieve some work together on this fascinating race, where your late father competed too. Best regards from France.

I was ten, in Costa Rica. I remember a few of these cars vividly and the drivers were super nice guys. Our neighbors managed the Dunlop dealer in San Jose and they took me to the checkpoint, the shop and even speeding around San Jose looking for spare parts! I’ll never forget! 👍🏻😊
