I'm dubious about the claim (4:10) that most fat sumo wrestlers have just below the skin, and not the more unhealthy fat around internal organs. Wikipedia suggests that former sumo wrestlers have a life expectancy of about 65 years, compared to all Japanese men with around 80 years. [Edit: That is mentioned later (6:25) in this video] I agree they are supremely strong and agile athletes but they are not healthy. Most of them have BMIs of between 40 and 50, where the standard medical definition of obesity is anything above 30.

I got into sumo after reading baki, after you get over the "fat guys in diapers" preconception and actually understand that rikishi are scarily powerful and that sumo matches are rich with culture and art, both martial and quasi-religious, it's actually extremely fun to watch and learn

Growing up in Japan, I would be exposed to some legitimate criticisms and controversies of the sumo world every once in a while. Things like woman officials not being allowed on the dohyo, match fixing, corrupt beyas and their hazing customs, Hakuhō's sometimes "cowardly" fighting manners, etc. It's a very dramatic sport. So to see criticisms (if you can even call it that) reduced to essentially fatphobia and "haha big men naked" is pretty wild.

They are absolutely fat and many are morbidly obese, training doesnt mean theres no fat around their organs, which there also absolutely is. Their shortened lifespan is literal proof, if the images werent enough, theyve damaged their bodies beyond repair and likely cant even stop the eating after theyre done with sumo, and they dont have the same training to counter the amount of fat they hold. What you mean is theyre well trained and hold a good amount of muscle mass along with that. I dont know why even make such a retarded claim lol

This had me thinking about why there weren't any sumo sports anime that I'd heard of and I guess it's cause they want to appeal to a wider audience in the world. But I looked it up and there is one called Hinomaru Sumo. Does anyone know if it gives a somewhat realistic depiction or if its more fantasy/story driven? I quite like the genre of sports anime but I prefer it when it's kinda edutainment cause then you still learn stuff about the sport being depicted.
