This is awesome thanks! I was trying to get a kick to sustain for longer than 8 steps so I could do bad things to it and ended up spending a couple hours messing around with the 707"s deep state parameters trying to figure it out, it worked but meant I ate up an entire tone track just to do the thing. This is great idea. TIP: what I figured out thru trail and error is that the INSTRUMENT EDIT AENV (amp envelope) tab parameters you are adjusting in this video are... TVA Env Time 1= attack TVA Env Time 2= decay TVA Env time 3= sustain TVA Env time 4= release These are explained in the reference manual, but they are buried and organized in, what I find to be, a very convoluted diagram. I find the 707 really well designed, generally speaking, but the manual presentation, typically Roland, while better this time around is still at times torturous. Hope this info saves anyone reading this some time.

Hi Jeff I have a CG8 but have lost the supplied card adaptor - in the manual it says 'The card adaptor is only for use with the CG-8. Don’t use it with a conventional computer' do you know if there is there another adaptor that is compatable with the CG8 .or where I could buy a replacement one?

It was a while ago, but I just used a regular card reader as the CG8 is just a mini linux pc. There's even keyboard and mouse ports behind the blanking plates!

hi Jeff, what was the issue that you repaired? I have the issue that I see the cg-8 logo and then after it goes black, the vga monitor doesn't get a signal anymore. The cg-8 buttons work and the system did start up but no signal out of the rgb port. Maybe it's the motherboard? Any suggestions? Bram
@sohatyi9 ай бұрын
It has a switch in config to only send out of the VGA or the Composite, so that's why that happens. For me, it was a corrupt swap partition. If you take the drive out and fix the swap partition using a Linux drive manager, it could help. Get a disk image first, so if it all goes wrong, you have a backup.
@bramsegers24149 ай бұрын
I’m happy you respond. All forums got deleted by Roland/Edirol, so all that information is lost. So you think the problem is not the motherboard? What switch do you mean? How do I switch between rgb and composite? In the bios? I’m not so familiar with linux, I know how to make images of drives and do repairs for windows. Can I get in contact with you? What IDE adapter you use to connect the drive once you take it out of the cg-8? I should definitely make a backup. Did you make an image backup? Can you share it with me?@@sohatyi
@sohatyi9 ай бұрын
@bramsegers2414 I think you can find the cg8 manual online still. I'll try and find the video output switch for you later. Your symptoms are the exact same as mine, partial boot then black screen. So I think the unit may be fine. You have to buy a laptop IDE to USB enclosure. Luckily, they're really cheap. Install a Linux drive manager application. It should read the disk and show you a number of partitions. One of which is marked as a swap partition. The drive is easy enough to remove and it's just a small laptop one. I'll see if I can find my backup but you shouldn't need it.

oh man you made my day so much fun, I found a separate letter besides the manual, it was not written in the manual, after you told me I started searching! thank you so much :DDDD I still want to upgrade the drive to a ssd, but I don't like to make an image because iam to careful and worried that something might happen to the drive, would be great if you could share your backup....@@sohatyi

hi Jeff you talk about a laptop IDE to USB enclosure but the drive uses a 44 pin ide connector. I can't find anything compatible to connect the drive. Because most of the IDE cables are 40 pin. What did you use exactly ?@@sohatyi

Very interesting and useful video. Thanks for posting! My only other comment would be that it's really hard to hear your voice over the sound of the unit, and your hand blocks the screen whenever you are editing nearby controls so we can't see what your actually doing.

one way to skin that cat would be to set up a Tone Track as Jeff has done here, and use that track to process all your samples. Not ideal but would save you having to mess with the envelope every time, and you can use the track for another purpose once you are done.

But mc707 for sure it stands on its own. Is a complete multisynths and multifx box so im at a point of wondering what 2xmc707s can do... amazing work bro

I've skipped a lot because it's very boring (sorry!). It seems that you've didn't told about the biggest moment: Volca Modular's wave folder isn't very "high stage". It has just three folds and it's pretty low for nowdays. But generally it's a no-brainer to buy. And I've bought a used one for my experiments and music tracks :)
@whiskeyace3982 жыл бұрын
So the sidechain compression only works based on where you set the triggers on step sequencer? In other words you can't select the source audio to use?
@sohatyi2 жыл бұрын
Yup, it isn't triggered by a gate signal

Great video but it is still very hard to follow along if you are not actually pointing out each specific input or output. Thank you for explaining the LFO section. It doesn't say LFO!!! However I am having a most difficult time trying to understand what you are doing at 17:50 .... I got the connection from the "pitch" of the clock into the one of the Split output ... but what is the next connection? "The Carrier Output" .... what is that? Now I have to go back over the entire video to understand what you mean by Carrier Output because nothing on the Volca Modular says that. Again, thank you for putting this video together it has allowed me to have a few major breakthrus on this mysterious box. Why Korg leaves everything as a mystery will be a mystery ... but at least we now know why people sell their Modulars off out of frustration.
@sohatyi3 жыл бұрын
The carrier output is on one of the outputs of the "source" module. I think the one marked with a triangle wave.
@HazeAnderson3 жыл бұрын
Yes I see now, thanks. :) Been spending all morning learning this thing! The output with the triangle wave is actually the modulator ... the carrier is other output (to the right).

@sohatyi3 жыл бұрын
The TR8S doesn't have the same kind of fine envelope control. I've managed to get some loops and drones to last a bar or two and hide any joins with beats, but you also quickly eat up the sample memory using long samples.

It's certainly a challenging sound. Hooking it up to a looper and some FX produced something more listenable, but still in a weird experimental way.
@iceblack243 жыл бұрын
you can also copy entire channels (or what is the official name?) so first set everything up how you want it, tone track, clip ect for one track. Then copy that to the other 7 tracks. saves you some time.
@ednasdiscomachine60493 жыл бұрын
That's a very weird sounding LM-1! Especially the snare. Did you use someone else's samples? It's missing all the punch and character of the orginal. I've just created a kit for my TR-8S using the original LM-1 .bins converted to .wav files. The original sounds are very crunchy 8 bit, and it *takes* ages to get anywhere near the 'Linn' sound by attempting to recreate the internal filtering/compression etc... I used to demo the predecessor, the LinnDrum back in the day, and they are a sonic powerhouse!

If you poke around online you can find them, but you need to persevere. You want to try and get the original ROM samples and then mess around with the settings for each instrument. The TR-8S is an amazing machine for recreating old drum machines. Good luck!
