I've been to Budapest Hungary. I loved it. I was totally amazed & had so much fun. Always learning. People were friendly, etc. I would go again. ❤

In Budapest 2018, My daughter and I had Mother's Day brunch at Mazel Tov, it was so good we returned for another meal before leaving the city a week later. I was not at all impressed by the museum in the townhouse (House of Terror?) Although the designers had to work with an existing structure, it is the most poorly planned layout in all the museums I've visited. And not user friendly from a language standpoint.

In my circumstances, I would travel for love, after careful consideration. Does the potential upside vastly outweigh the potential waste of funds? You only live once, so why have potential regrets when if it does not work out, it will likely be a learning experience that you will grow immensely from. Sure there could be some pain, but if we do not take risks in life we become numb to the joy. There would be a lot to consider before the cabin door closes though.
