I love that splitter/guard set up you built! I need to come up with something similar for my old Rockwell model 9. Its throat plate doesn't have enough clearance to add either a riving knife or those little plastic splitters. It also has those grate wings on it's sides.

Probably wasn't tilted much. I seldom ever find a need to tilt my old table saw. Usually if I want an angle cut I can use my miter gauge/fence for that or my miter (chop) saw. I used to have a caged window frame mounted fan that lag bolted to a window frame and had a belt driven fan inside the cage made sometime in the early 50's. It's motor also had the little flip doors on either end for adding oil. I bet it's still running today somewhere, lol. My band saw's tensioner likes to stick to the point I often have to tap it lightly with a ball peen hammer to get it to release. Been meaning to get a dry lube like graphite powder for it.

I also have this same saw. Would you mind saying what size bearings I should order for it? Hope to have mine looking and operating as well as yours soon :) Would also love to know how that riving knife was attached.

I don't have the number memorized but they are a very common size and available on Amazon. Check the side of the bearing when you remove it. There should be a number on it that can be ordered. Documentation on line for the saw should also specify the bearing number to be used. As a last resort, you can measure ID, OD and thickness and just order by specs from a bearing company.

Nice find. I wish I had those wheels. I have this saw I bought new many moons ago. I ran it a little hard yesterday. It seized and now when I start it I have to manually spin the blade forward before I hit the start button. Otherwise it spins backward. Any idea haw to fix it?

Sounds like it might be a capacitor. Does yours have one mounted on the outside of the motor? Replace the cap first. There is not an easy way to reliably check if the cap is good. They are cheap so just replace. Some motors have an internal startup mechanism that is centrifugal and the contacts or brushes don't make contact.

The original bearings on my saw had inner races that were a good deal wider than the outer races, therefor they held that bushing quite snuggly but when i replaced the bearings, everything was a little different due to the replacements not habing the inner races any wider, I imagine getting ahold of the NOS originals would be difficult and exorbitantly costly. The saw is working absolutely great now despite the protective shaft bushing basically just rattling around in there now.

I have a much older version of this saw (40's Delta Rockwell according to my research) I recently replaced the bearings on, that one on the arbor side is a MUTHA to get off and back on as well! I put the shaft into the freezer and the bearing into the oven on 250 for about thirty twenty minutes and it was ok getting onto the shaft but had one helluva time gettin the old one off.

Helpful. I forgot that I have a bad memory (you can see how that works lol). I did a full disassembly on a model 10 and let several days pass before I even ordered the bearings so everything that looked so easy to remember became a pile of puzzle parts. Your camera shots and angles are great and did the trick of unlocking the memory. Thank you.

Hey, this was great. Question: I dont have enough room to center blade with trunnion adjustment. Is there a way to move the arbor flange to the right, If I am looking from the rear? Currently the blade cuts into the red throat plate, when my blade is at 45 degrees. Thanks.
@black1985vette
@black1985vette Жыл бұрын
The blade should be about 1 inch from the right edge of the opening in the bed when standing in front of the saw. The trunnions have a limited range. Mostly just to square up the blade. If the blade is off by a lot I suspect something is not in the correct place. If the blade is correct the throat plate may be the issue. Is it stock?

I’m using your video to help me replace bearings. Also’ I notice a 1/16 rust void in the middle space. This means that the arbor moved recently towards the pulley side. I’m hoping that the washer holding in the bearing is loose.

Or I can see a serious problem with this saw with no “REAL” riving knife, or kick back pawls. With what the riving knife what 4 inches back off the blade, your piece is usually going to get stuck between the riving knife and the blade causing it to shoot at you. This is why it has taken major lawsuits for companies to learn from their mistakes and proper relations to put in place, because of regulations we would still be using radial arm saws turn out word to wards with the full blade facing the stomach to cut sheets of plywood.

@tracyalexander3662

So the motor mount on the rear of the old saw slides from side to side with the arbor assembly as you articulate it... The problem originally is the belt twisting places a lot of tension on the bearings both in arbor assembly and the motor itself. The later model 113 the motor is suspended on the rear of the beefed up arbor assembly.... So I'm trying to figure out how to articulate the motor in conjunction with the assembly but as ya may know the heavy motor is way too heavy for any suspension. So I'm attempting to make something, and I'm at a brick wall on it... If I could send ya a couple pics perhaps you could see my conundrum.

@@tracyalexander3662 A couple of thoughts; You can tilt the blade and then re-tension the belt. This fixed motor was a cost saving design. Not optimal at all. On projects like this I fix it up and if I like it better than my current saw I keep it. If not it moves on to another home. I looked at modifying the mount and have all the metal working equipment to do it, but in the end it is still not going to be a great saw. The Rockwell is still with me and does a great job. I have a 2hp motor on it now and will put a 3hp on if I find one reasonable. My approach is to find them dusty, rusty and cheap. Then if they don't work out I can sell the parts to recover what I paid and move on.

I understand and yes sir. The old Craftsman tablesaw is becoming a little bit of a pain, I just plugged the thing up and shot the cap within a couple mins, which by the way is the thing that was "wrong" with it when I bought it, I proceeded to reset the centrifugal switch and replace the cap, now it's pull the motor apart again and check that centri-switch again and get a new cap... It's the large 1 hp motor very heavy, so yeah... Seriously considering pushing the thing back to the corner for a while not sure exactly I suppose it's worth a few mins to check the switch before I do. I'm in Alabama and it's kinda hard to locate the switch, but either way kind sir, thank you for sharing your knowledge and time to reply

I inherited a Rockwell saw from the 60s, from a man who taught me wood working. He was a perfectionist and I really learned a lot from him. He lived to 101 and was so happy that I took his tools. I have my Grandfather’s Wards Powr Kraft 8” Bench Saw, the best one in the catalog for 1950. I have all the parts except the splitter and guard which I remember seeing in the 1970s when my Dad had it. I suspect they didn’t survive a move in 1980. I have a shaper head with straight cutters and a dado stack, all offered in the 1950 catalog. It has a big 1/2hp motor my grandfather scrounged up somewhere. My Dad said it was a furnace fan motor, it is so big that the arbor won’t tilt all the way to 45°. It’s in pretty good shape but I haven’t used it in over 10 years. I have a Craftsman 10” 113 contractor saw I use, that came from wife’s grandfather, it’s newer and has all the safety equipment.

My Walker-Turner resto project saw has the original fence, but it's missing the cam handle from what I can tell of the 1940's product catalog. Thanks for this video! I just inherited my uncle’s vintage Craftsman 10” table saw, model 113.299120. It needs to be cleaned up and a new belt for the motor as far as I can see so far. Probably a new blade as well. It hasn’t been used in a long time. It came with 1 iron table wing. The rip fence and miter guide. Blade cover with what looks like 2 little saw blades at the back end. I’m not sure what they’re called but it looks like they should grab the wood to prevent kickbacks. I also got a vintage craftsman duel sander. 4” disc with 6” belt sander. A router with bits and a tall craftsman tool box with numerous drawers filled with tools. 😁 I’m just getting into woodworking so I’m happy I got his saw. I’m a 37 yo stay at home mom but Ive always like to build stuff. I’ve made a 1’x4’ planter box with casters out of 2 pallets for my mom and a hanging porch swing from pine both with only a jig saw and router. I’ll probably need to find someone to help answer questions on how to fix this table saw though. I’ve never had one before. I found the manual online available for purchase for $18. So I think I should go ahead and get it. It should be helpful. Both table saw and sander are very heavy. Iron. Made in USA 🇺🇸

This was very helpful. I have a Delta 34-410B, which has an identical configuration inside. I have done a lot of searching and wasn't sure how best to handle the replacement of the arbor bearings. For one thing, the exploded diagrams on parts websites don't seem to account for the 7/8" nut that fits inside that bearing retainer ring/nut. I gave up looking for Delta and searched for Rockwell instead. Your video made all the difference. I had everything apart, and the arbor wasn't moving. I wasn't sure how hard to hit it, and then I saw your demonstration. I hit it a little harder, and it popped right out. I wish mine went back together as easily. My bearings fit tightly, even with the addition of a bit of 3-in-1 oil to help them slide. I used my scroll saw to cut a plug similar to the one you did on the lathe. Not as elegant, but it worked. I haven't put everything back together again, but I'm pretty confident that it's going to work.
