Fabulous car, worth more than 10 average people earn in a lifetime. The way it outruns and outguns everything else on the track has me wondering whether it's indeed just the car's superiority, the driver's skill and cojones, or partly the respect being granted by everyone else on the circuit. My kid bought a challenger when he joined the Marines. We took care of it while he was deployed. Drove it back to Pendleton from Nebraska. In the Nevada desert I opened it up. It roared with delight until I hit 130 MPH. After that it squealed for more. Awesome machine.

I was intoxicated by that car when the movie LeMans was released. A decade later, I met Steve McQueen at the fuel pit in Santa Paula where he was learning to fly his Stearman and I was fueling my Pitts aerobatic plane. I always associate the 917K with Steve McQueen and his understated demeanor.
