Paul and John has performed this song at a club in the year of 1960, when they performed under the name 'The Nerk Twins'. Wish there was a recording somewhere so we could hear it.

A little maiden climbed an old man's knee, Begged for a story, "Do, Uncle, please." Why are you single; Why live alone? Have you no babies, have you no home?" "I had a sweetheart, years, years ago: Where she is now, pet, you soon will know. List to the story, I'll tell it all. I believed her faithless, after the Ball." After the ball is over After the break of dawn After the dancer's leaving After the stars are gone Many a heart is aching If you could read them all Many the hopes that have vanished After the ball. Bright lights were flashing in the grand ballroom Softly the music, playing sweet tunes There came my sweetheart, my love, my own I wished some water, left her alone When I returned, dear, there stood a man Kissing my sweetheart, as lovers can Down fell the glass, pet, broken that's all Just as my heart was, after the ball After the ball is over After the break of dawn After the dancer's leaving After the stars are gone Many a heart is aching If you could read them all Many the hopes that have vanished After the ball. Long years have passed, child, I've never wed True to my lost love, though she is dead She tried to tell me, tried to explain I would not listen, pleadings were in vain One day a letter came from that man He was her brother, the letter ran That's why I'm lonely, not home at all I broke her heart, After the ball After the ball is over After the break of dawn After the dancer's leaving After the stars are gone Many a heart is aching If you could read them all Many the hopes that have vanished After the ball. After the ball is over After the break of dawn After the dancer's leaving After the stars are gone Many a heart is aching If you could read them all Many the hopes that have vanished After the ball.

I remember this at a very young age. It really is a classic pop song; it's got all the elements: inane lyrics, a good beat, a major key tune, a key change - perfect!

I can see why Elvis felt this song needed greater exposure. Great sound, love that Southern soul.

In the early 80s a radio station I listened to had a version of this with one of their DJs singing funny lyrics about drinking coffee, Weird Al style, such as I need caffiene or I'm real mean.

Elvis only did better because stations weren't afraid to play him. James was unkown. This version would have been a hit as well if it got the airplay. Elvis was just a glorified cover artist.

The Czechs love the American style country music , I used to live there and I was surprised at how much Americana they had assimilated , they love England as well , my ex mother in law had loads of English on her wall , she was obsessed with England , we took her to the seaside in England with her new husband , they loved it , they thought the food was awful , rightly so , it was shit
