Great ideas. But one thing that grates me with progressives is their adoption of beoliberal vocabulary and therefore concept. Example talking about capital, presumably human capital when capital could be replaced by 'capacity', or one of many words that don't allude to the acceptance of a toxic ideology. Just be aware than when you use their terminology that they have to some extent captured you and they can be seen to be speaking a common language and common concepts with you. That's all.

Started with Johnny and Costello's 'aspirational class' rising from the spectre of US/UK neoliberalism; the Australian labour mvt consigned to the dustbin marked idealism, supplanted by a weaker class - the social relata of self-centred consumers; clueless to what was given up Now slaves to debt and walked all over. Without at least half the population willing to stand up together, the Labour Party means nothing. How can it? Its just a pale imitation now, populated careerers. The leader, Albanese, is no more than a mid level bureaucrat representing a subjugated nation, moonlighting where he can on furthering non strategic issues in an ever increasing strategic world. I hope for a massive defeat of ALP in next election, followed by a clearing out. Keating (and Evans) should go ahead and choose people of like mind and heart to lead this party and start again.

Australia, like Canada, is a US-ass kissing boot licking slurping lapdog. It's willing to destroy its own economy to comply with US geopolitics initiatives. If you have any doubt, ask Germany. Canada and Australia are heading down the same path. Love from America.

I remember Senator Boutros-Boutros Evans and his drive to be in the UN. I do agree the AUKUS subs is a bad thing. So we are getting subs to protect our overseas trade from Chinese intervention when our biggest trading partner is China.

If the govt has no accountability over the 3G network shutdown and its probable disastrous consequence then how could we expect the govt to be accountable for nuclear powered devices, the disposal of toxic waste and helping to create an arms race in the region? Unfortunately politics is seen by those in it as a stepping stone to greater riches from the proceeding jobs and boards members can sit on when the have left office. Governing for the future is no longer a priority as greed and avarice have become the new norm.

The world is always changing, this AUKUS deal is built on the premise that the USA and the UK will always be the head of the wold empire, both the USA and the UK are on the brink of BANKRUPTCY, BRICS is the way of the future. The only reason America is concerned about TAYWAN is because AMERICA wants to install rockets there to threaten China. What intelligent man and an important speech.

ScoMo Dutton sold out and did the AUKUS deal but Albo did not have the spine to cancel it. That shows both Libs and Labour are under war monger USA. AUKUS should go thru a Referendum. ScoMo is now enjoying the kickbacks in DC? Meanwhile homeless, debt rises and public infra is in decay.

So has anyone checked out Boris Johnson's memoir? Daniel Martin of the UK based Telegraph has spilled the beans on the French submarine deal being scrapped. Apparently, it seems to get revenge on the French. Adding insult to injury some sources are reporting an investigation by the US Congress into building flaws in US vessels, including submarines, that could be deliberate. Of course, our local media is only angry at Boris because he has made statements about the Queens health prior to her death.

I think the AUKUS deal will get run over by technology. These jaw droppingly expensive machines will be too valuable to deploy in anger. And drone tech is advancing so rapidly that it is impossible to predict the platforms that will be available in just 5 years time, never mind 10 or 20. Submarines being what they are, must be incredibly vulnerable to the Drone swarms of all sorts of specialisation that are likely to be (are being) developed.

By the time we possibly get one sub, China, if it is the enemy, will have so many sophisticated underwater drones that could overwhelm any sub (as air drones have done to tanks in Ukraine for example), The whole AUKUS stitch up would be laughable if it wasn't so dangerous. Another example of Australian Govts licking US boots.

The idea that the USA will be able to fulfil its submarine deal is the biggest joke in history. The USA cant even build enough of its own fleet, cant even supply Taiwan with basic weapons Taiwan has paid for 10years ago. This is all about Americas imperial power and its control over western countries. The USA could careless about Australia and in the event of a conflict with China its Ozzie's that will bear the brunt whilst Americans citizens are safe home

Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot! This is all nonsense of course. Just look at Czechcoslavkia, the Sudentenland and Poland just before world war two. These states had control over their own government before the war but that did not stop them from being taken over/invaded by Nazi Germany which started WW2. This fellow talks about transparency and accountability but does not mention that we have a representative government meaning that the elected members to parliament represent the community they do not directly mimic the views of the community especially those that are a distinct minorty such as anti-nuke, anti-US demonstrators who get encouragement for their protesting by current international protagonists of the western democracies. If you want direct involement in government decisions go and live in Switzerland where their cantons are such a form of govenment. So our government is not dysfunctional but just doing what they have always done. He then says what do we want without saying who we is meant to be, he then says no nuclear weapons in Australia but we have had nuclear weapons unannounced on US military ships and planes for decades. Australia has not signed the Treaty on the Prohibition on Nuclear Weapons so no cigar there. He then goes on to say that Australia's future must lie in Asia, but he does not realise it but in a sense it already does. We have friendly nation allies in Sinagpore, Japan, Philipines just to mention a few but the thing is we are not going to subordinate ourselves to China who have tried to bully us to bend to their commands. Remember the 14 or so demands that China demanded of us a few years ago? And why should we provide guarantees China's existence when we don't share their values? To make such a guarantee would merely make up a lapdog.. Its also complete nonsense to say our defence is enfeebled by B52s, and other US assets that may be partially based in Australia. The great thing about nuclear weapons is that their existence has actually bought a level of stability to world affairs over the past sixty or so years, it is our task to assist our westerm democratic allies to maintain the peace through showing united resolve. I am not going to comment much further but you get the idea as to how crazy those appeasing current international bully boys and who denigrate our ties to our greatest democratic ally, the US are.

Disregarding my long-term distaste for Gareth's subscription to Globalisation, his comments land at ground zero. Heed, and heed well. Curiously, this being Oz history turned on its head, Gareth follows the criticisms of Prme Minister Malcolm Fraser in his book "Dangerous Allies". Time sure change. I would like to add what Gareth has left unsaid, or circumvented altogether. (1) AUKUS is pretext for a financial gift to the bankrupt US and UK. Neither can afford a full-on war. (2) The US nuclear subs are obsolete and noisey. (3) Any future war will involve missiles, artilery, and drones. Our vast circumference of coast makes submarines useless as defence. They are simply non-cost-effective. (4) A better defence is to remove all nuclear and missile targets from Australia: Pine Gap; the Katherine B52 staging base; the two satellite relay centres near Darwin; the sub base in Darwin; and the missile launching platform in Gulkula, NE Arnhemland. The latter is illegal and violates the 1987 ban on all launching bases in the NT, as too dangerous for residents. In other words, take Fraser's advice and expel the US from Australia. They are the only reason we might ever be attacked. (5) The US is not obliged to defend Australia, has no intention of defending Australia, has betrayed us twice, and is regarded by the vast majority of nations in the world as the primary cause of war, along with its partner, Israel. Every Australian... read "Dangerous Allies" now while you and your children are still alive. Finally, the most likely date of WWIII reaching Australia is suggested by respected geopolitical experts as December 2014. This will kill 4000 people on the Gove Peninsula from chlorine gas drift; 15,000 in Katherine from the nuclear blast at Tindel; 200,000 in Darwin from strategic missile strikes which will detonate the ten giant INPEX gas tanks, which will wipe a forty K radius of the East Arm site. I do not know how many will die elsewhere in Australia. All because of the US alliance. I have to take exception to Gareth's claim "we are a fiercely independent nation". We are the grovelling lapdog of the American Empire which, as we speak, is now militarily inferior to Russia, China, Iran, and Turkey. The US will lose its wars and, in fact, has never won a war against an equal adversary. Twice it has been defeated by peasants. It's missiles are less than half the quality of the Russian versions, especially the Mach 25 Scramjet hypersonic Zircon that is fully manoeuvreable to target. US 155 mm artilery shells cost nine times those of other nations. And Iran's drones are equal to America's and ten times as cheap. We now cower behind the very worst defence policy in human history. That is not an exaggeration and will soon become globally acknowledged.
