Everyone always blames Jay but it was the NBC Execs that created this situation. People act like Jay marched in to NBC and said “give me my show back” not how it went. NBC wasn’t happy with Conan’s ratings after Jay’s demographic went to Letterman. NBC should have gave him more time

To be fair the tonight show has been bad ever since Carson left. Actually Leno was filling in often before that, so it has been at least not great since the late 80s. At least everything else Conan has done has been gold. The tonight show brass suck balls. At least they got Conan and Andy back together <3

A bit of extra tea for those who don't know this story already... Leno once was in serious discussions with ABC to leave NBC, and if it had happened, Leno would have taken Kimmel's timeslots and been his lead-in. So Jay started reaching out more to Jimmy in order to start a positive relationship with him in case that went through. Once NBC renewed Leno's contract once again, that whole dog-and-pony show he was putting on for Kimmel abruptly stopped. I remember Kimmel quoting that he felt "worked over" once he figured out what Leno was doing. So yeah. Jimmy wasn't a big Leno fan.

In 2024, NBC is still seen as the Stupid kid on the block. Missed opportunity after missed opportunity. Imagine backing the literal horse looking man over the peoples Conan. Whichever exec made that decision shouldn’t only be fired but kept from working in tv ever again. What a joke.
