The problem with NPT being that if you do not screw in the sensor (or whatever) far enough, there are not enough 'threads' keeping it in ... under pressure. This could happen when someone tries to screw in something with Metric (M) thread. It is not easy to distinguisch between NPT and M thread. The NPT in this vid is exagerated. Wouldn't be the first time a (deadly) accident happend that way. Stay away from NPT !

How do you measure the roll?

Does the servo need to be that far out? Can't you put it further in and taper the fins. Yes it would make it roll slow but it seems like its pretty fast anyway

You can find a lot more on the ASME spec B 1.20.1. In addition to the helical wedging caused by the matching tapers, pipe threads are often assembled with a thread sealant which has the dual purpose of lubricating the connection so you can tighten it further and sealing gaps between the threads. Common thread sealants are teflon tape which is usually used in plumbing applications and pipe dope which is mostly used in gas bearing connections.

When I die I want my ashes to be put into the nose cone of a rocket and launched into space so that the trajectory of the rocket inevitably lands me in the sun (pending no collision with cosmic debris). I think this guy could get it done for me

NPT threads that are screwed together form a spiral void between the tip of the external thread and the bottom of the recess in the internal thread. That spiral void requires a thread sealant to prevent leaks. Teflon tape or thread sealant (used to be called pipe dope) can be used for that purpose. NPTF don't require a thread sealant to prevent leaks.

USE NTPF the is for fuel. It will make a leak proof seal without glues or teflon. It just has tighter tolerances.

the T in NPT stands for taper, not thread, as opposed to NPS, which is national pipe straight. The other toolmakers / machinists in the comments are correct in that your example hole is tapered far beyond what NPT should be. (1.7899 degree half-angle)

why is this interesting? How many thousands of times have people put roll control on fins? Are you re-inventing the wheel because you're bored? Go back to coloring books and show them to your parents if you got nothing to do.

I used to work in that building! The whole building used to vibrate when the ran the arc jet! Seeing the test pieces in the arc flow with the shockwave was the closest I’d ever get to seeing what it was like to enter atmosphere from space!
