The telecommunications Revolution coinciding with the rise of globalisation is totally not a coincidence... you may be not old enough to remember the time when if you wanted to make transatlantic phone call you needed to book with the operator in advance - and it cost an arm and a leg. it was cheaper to send a missive by recording a message on a cassette tape and posting that, even if it needed to go to the USA from the UK. my mother and her sisters would do this all the time, living on 3 different continents. Then followed email this was also pivotal. Now we have portable video devices which can send back info about the conditions which products that we buy are made in - and that we now increasingly find are unacceptable... IMO globalisation was driven by Communications and of course we also needed the international Financial operations which were similarly driven by digital technology

Peace was enjoyed for ages by world ship mariners in this international water until China's unilateral grab ( invalidated by UN Arbitral Court) of almost the entirety of South China Sea + parts of Exclusive Economic Zones ( EEZs) of the Phils, Vietnam, S.Korea,Indonesia,Malaysia & Borneo which countries have sole jurisdiction & domain ( same for all countries) per UN UNCLOS to which ironically China is a signatory. China is persistently focussing on less militarily prepared Phils on their invalidated( 9? 10?) dash line claim, reason why Phil welcomes US,Japan, France, Australia et al countries' actual & expressed support) but China seems not as insistent to better-militarily armed Vietnam,S.Korea & Indonesia which countries firmly time & again warded off even burned Chinese fishing & naval boats' intrusions in their EEZs, also was not as insistent when Indonesia & Malaysia determinedly put up oil platforms in their EEZs disregarding China's protests.

Interesting discussion. The host appears to understand the situation better than the 2 guest Emmer from SOAS is of course the anti-China element here. While the host tried to inject some maturity to the discussion, he bearly made a difference. To really understand political situation it is important that listeners is aware of these premise, politics is about agenda, manipulation of information to achieve those agenda, everybody lies and people can be misinformed either intentionly or otherwise. There are movers and there are useful idiots There is also the urge for self preservation besides interest and there is a power level dynamics, capacity and determination. There are also local dynamics/politics. Since the movers in this situation are the US and China, it their intention, capacity and determination that matters. Others may align with one or the other or try to stay neutral depending on their agenda or forces of their local politics. The agenda of the US is to contain China, either to limit its influence, economy or military power. The Biden admin may feel it is still stronger than China and may want a war now, the trigger could be a useful idiot like Taiwan, Japan or the Philippines. Or the US may just want to limit China influence by embarrassing it or sacrificing a pawn for rgat purpose. China is a growing power that is still far from its potential. It will want to bide its time but will try to delay any confrontation. But it will eventually claim its prize. There are no rules or laws, just threat and opportunity. And the ability to do something about it. China and the US is a threat to each other. They will try to do something about it. The US wish to subjugate China, while China wish to break free. Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines are US tools of subjugation. At some point China will want to free itself by removing the threats in its neighborhood.

Every one in every corner of the globe has the obligation and the right to help others fight of thieves. China's fishing vessels are indiscriminately fishing all over the world. So, shouldn't those vessels go back to Chinese waters and stay there? China has military presence in Africa and its navy sails in the Baltics, Midditeranean seas and the arctic. Countries are interconnected now. China's, greed, thuggery and thievery must be collectively addressed by all countries. Chinese bots really think that there's one rule that apply to the world and there's another for China.

Chinese naval ships are sailing the Red Sea, Baltic, Arctic, Mediterranean and other seas. Chinese fishing boats are depleting fishing stocks everywhere. Chinese troops are in Africa and meddling in the Israeli-Hamas war. The parts of the SCS that belong to the Philippines are over a thousand kilometers from China's shorelines. Why are Chinese vessels intruding in waters that is more than 1k away from Chinese shorelines?
@sudoren75723 күн бұрын
The SCS involves international waters which are subject to international law (to which CHINA is a willing signatory), and affects international economies (from the Middle East, through India, across Southeast Asia, into East Asia, all the way to Oceania, and North America), with surrounding countries (including the PH) that have international treaties with other nations (the US). That's why. And also, anyone with a map, or a phone doesn't even need to fly to see how ludicrous the 10-dash line is, it cuts far too closely to countries that are far closer to the great majority of the area than China. A 10-dash line mind you created in the 20th century by the Nationalists, later adapted by the Communists who were proven to create fictional accounts to support a totally false historical claim to the area as shown before an international tribunal. Ancient Chinese never even saw, let alone set foot on, or rule these geographical features. International law, which the PRC willingly became a signatory to after overthrowing the Nationalists, does not even recognize historical claims as a basis, and the geographical features are not real islands which generate EEZs and naturally support communities (only artificial ones the PRC suddenly seized and reclaimed and militarized them).

@@brianliew5901 We finally kicked out the US military from the PH in the 90s, and enjoyed two decades of peace and good relations with China afterwards until in the 2010s when China suddenly seized and militarized several locations in the area, including a shoal within missile striking range of Manila that was previously not even claimed by China, and we had 6 years of a president who did everything to appease China, and to alienate the West. What did we get? Less than 1% of pledged economic investments, more seized areas, a blockaded outpost, and fishermen driven out of their traditional fishing areas. The professor is speculating too much and should listen to Anders Puck Nielsen. What individual countries have realized, each of them can not resist an aggressive Russia alone. They all came to the conclusion that banding together makes them safer. Assuming a specific behavior of Russia or interpretation how Kremlin plan their future in a changing world order is not really a valid strategy for them. Way too much 'long-shots' and repeating Kremlin's propaganda and taking them at face value. He does not understand the political and social development in Russia since Soviet Union collapse. The speaker was ok on some aspects but not on the crucial questions. For example, he argued that China has no alternative to the existingbpostv1945 order but anyone who cares to read China's three Global Initiatives can see that it does indeed have a well worked out alternative which is much better than the current western dominated system. That is why China is now supported in these initiatives by the majority of countries in the UN and why the US only has around 30 countries standing by its side.
From Adolf Heusinger to Jens Stoltenberg, NATO has been led by depraved politicians. In its original form NATO was certainly useful and a smart arrangement. Now it has become a liability.

That is common sense logic right? Any country that is weak and unable to stand up for itself gets bullied. There is nothing sinister about it. That is the way the world works. I visited Beijing in 1979 in an official government-led delegation in 1979. At dinner my Chinese host went to great lengths to explain why China will reclaim all land north of the Amur River and there was a very deep-seated antagonism against what was then the USSR because of that Russian aggression by the Czar. Culturally, this puts China on a revenge footing against Putin’s Russia.

I don't remember any such debates or presentations on the US'' shock and awe campaign against the sovereign country of Iraq or on the UK's supply of depleted uranium weapons whose toxic residues continue to give children of Iraq brain cancer and other diseases (as the late John Pilger has documented) . Therefore WWIII seems inevitable when we see how unapologetic white people and ex-colonial entities - such as King Leopold's armies in Belgian Congo who cut off BOTH hands of children and young men for petty theft and other minor infractions without the slightest compunction and went on to literally liquidate that country's first black elected prime minister Patrice Lumumba. We know only that Russia now has a university named after him - no one else in the entire West could ever think of such an initiative. Democratic Sweden couldnt even investigate the death of its philosopher diplomat Dag Hammarskjold (also the first Secy. General of the UN) when his plane was shot down over Katanga during the civil war that ensued in the Congo. The East and most of the global South cannot possibly trust the old monarchies and ex-colonial governments of the West ever again.

This. gentleman's statement on descendants of Russian Soviets of a 100 years ago never having apologised for how they behaved in the Baltic countries during their Communist past sounds absurd to people of the Indian sub-continent who havent forgotten how their forebears were robbed, killed, forced into slave labour on their own farms for the profit of British corporations, how their rebels were executed by being stuffed into cannons and blown to bits to quell any further revolts (as several graphic art works of the period show). Nor can we forget how both the US and UK threatened India and the people of erstwhile East Pakistan during Bangladesh's War of Independence, the first by bringing its Seventh Fleet and USS Enterprize to nuke India's ports and cities and the second by threatening us with RAF bombers. Neither Nixon, nor any UN organization of the time or even one of the 38 countries India appealed to for aid to feed the 10 MILLION East Bengalis who fled to India as refugees in 1970-71 ever gave a dime in aid at that time. It never occurred to us to ask for apologies for these lapses of humanity from.these champions of democracy and rule of law in the West.
