is it a plugin to add a ip

No. Your IP is given to you by your internet provider. What you will need to do is go onto your router and assign the PI a static IP address. You will then be able to give this to your friends and then they can connect :)

I apologize for the fundamentality of my question, but what does this set you up to do? I have accessed my Synology nas database using your instructions, only I used HeidiSQL as the client. Originally, my goal was to find software or set up something to index documents on my nas based on specific topics covered. I don't think any of the software on my Synology will allow me to craft my own search/filter topics. If you have any thoughts on where I should start, I'd love to know.

@lisastahl5867 Hi, no need to apologise :) I set mine up to use as a local database to develop applications against before publishing them to a production type environment. Easier to debug, my data is local rather than in the cloud and if the Internet ever went down then I can still access the database.

Thanks for the video. Super helpful. I'm a complete newbie to databases. My son (grade school) is starting to get interested in programing and I figured I'd set up a database for him on our Synology. I've been trying to decide whether to start with Mariadb or PostgreSQL. Since Synology has the MariaDB already as an option I figured I would go with that. I noticed you also had PostgreSQL - which would you recommend someone start with?

Hey there! Glad you found the video helpful! Starting with MariaDB on your Synology sounds like a great choice, especially since it's readily available. It's user-friendly and quite powerful for beginners and seasoned users alike. Setting up a database for your son is a fantastic idea to foster his interest in programming. Regarding whether to start with MariaDB or PostgreSQL, both are excellent options with their strengths. MariaDB is known for its MySQL compatibility and ease of use, making it a solid choice for beginners. On the other hand, PostgreSQL is highly praised for its advanced features and SQL compliance, which can be beneficial as your son progresses and dives deeper into databases. Since you're already considering MariaDB due to its availability on Synology, it sounds like a practical decision. It'll provide a solid foundation, and if in the future you feel the need to explore PostgreSQL or other databases, you can always expand your knowledge and skills. Feel free to ask if you have more questions or need further guidance on getting started with databases for your son!

Hey, yes they can if you setup port forwarding on your router. You may want to set a static IP for your PI also as this will make it easier. Hope this helps?
