Good work, thank you, as a before a horn player i always spot a reflection spot to have a strong horn sound. Dynamic microphone blend is the best.

In 2022 I finished a new symphony written in a very traditional style. Four movements, 51 minutes duration, Strings, winds and Timpani in pairs, plus 3 Trombones (Schubert-sized ensemble). Any orchestras interested?

….Mozart enriches life, every day. He is one of the strongest arguments against insane wars at the beginning of the 21st century. Mozart is the message from heaven against the Putins of this world, the psychotics, homophobes and misanthropic elements on earth. Mozart and this marvelous orchestra, mi piace moltissimo

It looks like it is essentially a SM57. And my advice doesn't change too much for mic placement. Ideally you'll want it in front of you and above your head by about an arm length and a half. You will want to avoid placing it bell side into the bell.

Thanks! Ya just BBCSO. I created it as a stress test to make sure that thinker orchestrated passages would work without issues when I am writing. It was a bit tedious but well worth the time as I learned a lot about the library and the Watergoin in writing it out like this.

Hey Drew, I'm glad you found it helpful. I am still rather surprised by how well my recommendations have help up over time. But I think I missed emphasizing a point in my video that now with COVID happening and so many people trying to record at home is that for French Horn especially keep the mic in front of you at the very least. If you try to close mic the bell you end up with a sound that is very much like a tenor tuba, and absolutely nothing like a French horn. I had the opportunity to record Mahler 1st symphony while at IU and spot miced the horn section from about 40 feet away behind the section (on the wall with a PZM mic if you know what those are) and to my surprise the spot was fairly useless because the spot still sounded like a bunch of tenor tubas even at that distance!

Hey there! I’m finally launching the Cue Tube composers’ community with a scoring competition with a nice prize and the bonus that the community will choose the winner, not me! Take a look at my KZbin channel or web site. All the details are there and I’ve chosen a great clip for you. I really hope you will take part! I can’t wait to see what you create and I’d love it if you shared this as wide as you can so that we can grow the community and attract more clips and input from filmmakers. Good luck in the competition if you take part and take care in the meantime!

I'm long overdue to give feedback, after you so graciously did so for me in a really substantive way. I wrote a lengthy note of thanks on my own page. Overall, I really enjoyed this score. It kept me engaged from start to finish. The instrumentation in the first half was excellent, although after a while I felt that you perhaps leaned too heavily on the natural minor scale with the string motif; I think the intensity and uncertainty of the scene called for a bit more color here, although this is entirely a matter of personal taste. The transition to loading the rocket launcher was very smooth, and an unexpected change to kind of an EDM-ambient anchor motif that worked well during this lull. The rocket launch, ascent and descent, I thought you absolutely nailed it. I loved the way the music tracked the trajectory of the rocket, and I noticed wood blocks or something similar at the high end that added extra spice. And the transition to the choral element as the car emerged from the fire was outstanding. I noticed that you ducked the music to allow room for the vocals, and at times this was a little unnatural because it required an abrupt volume drop during a climactic moment. The ending was excellent, and I really liked the use of brass here. Real cliffhanger of a chord to end on! Nice work, and best wishes to you. -Andrew

Hey @Andrew Maleson, thanks for your feedback. I agree partially with your comment on too much natural minor (although I thought some of it was harmonic minor) but in any case I do agree I did stick in the same tonality, and in listening back I wish I had done some sort of B part because it really is slightly annoying that I just repeat the same thing over and over again. And as far as ducking the music, I might have gone a bit too far but as I am working on some longer projects where I am also doing mixing for the picture I felt it appropriate to make sure the DX was heard. I do agree it is weird to have the music duck down so much but then I feel like it is motivated by DX being present and its a convention that most people will understand why it's happening. It certainly would be idea though if I had better orchestrated it in places so I wouldn't have had to duck the music so much. I am glad you like the rocket trajectory music, I did too. I probably like to too much, it was so much fun to play. I mean I was having an absolute ball playing in that part of the sequence. And I also really like the Choral element coming out of the car explosion too. Those are my two favorite parts of what I wrote. So I am glad you liked them too. And finally I'm slightly surprised you liked the ending so much. I thought it felt really tacked on like I had gotten to the stop part of the sequence and then realized that I still had 30 sec left of music to write (seeing as that is exactly what happened) so I am delighted to know that at least one person felt it worked well!

This sounds excellent. Well done. Whenever I see orchestral sessions with such high track counts (at least 70 by my count), I wonder if I could do it with fewer tracks, using only VSL's VI Series, VI Pro, and MIR. I was wondering if you could send me the MIDI file so I could try.

Hey Gary! Thanks. I actually have no idea how many tracks I used actively but 70 sounds about right. Maybe a bit high. And I'd be happy to share the MIDI file, just shoot me an email at [email protected] and I'll send it your way.
