This whole scene, this moment, really is brilliance. Even without subtitles translating for you, you can perfectly tell what's happening through the animation, direction, and voice acting. It's practically Shakespearean if I dare say. I'll admit, I only started getting into One Piece last year, and was skeptical if I'd wanna stick with it, knowing much of it there is to watch. This scene right here answered that question and made me say "Yeah, I'm sticking with it til the end."

Luffy has no context of Nami's past. He just knows that someone hurt his friend. For all he knows, that someone killed her mom, or called her a mean name. He didn't care, he just knew that that someone needed to be Gomu Gomu no Pistol'd until that person had paid for hurting his friend. Then Nami asks for help. At that point, it's time to listen to Overtaken and walk to Arlong Park.

Nami cry of pain Fueled his rage against arlong right down to that final kick at the end. And to this day I can't recall him giving his hat to anyone except nami. She may be one of the weakest members of the crew but he trusts her implicitly with his prized hat. That alone speaks volumes. He will protect Nami against anyone. This scene is probably one of the most iconic in anime history in my opinion.

You know what i appreciate? them not playing sad music in this scene, not trying to tug at your hearts using sad music as a crutch but with pure voice work and context, music only kicking in once the group is determined to act
