Wow! Way back in the mid-70s, I worked with Showcase Jazz at Michigan State University, and we brought the Burton Quintet in. I was able to spend some time backstage with the entire group, so met Pat (who was quite young then), Gary, Mick, Steve (nicest musician I ever met) and Ra Kalam, who at the time was just Bobby Moses. 6 shows over 3 nights, with Colors of Chloe the headline song each set. Lovely, wonderful stuff.

Two of the great masters of truly and honestly creative American music: my mentor and friend Ra-Kalam Bob Moses & Pat Metheny. To call them jazz musicians would be true, yet somehow limited-both of them defy categorization. Both are also acknowledged and recorded composers, and both are articulate thinkers, teachers and leaders in a grand overarching sense. -Greg Burrows

I was able to hang with Bob a couple times, including a lesson in Brooklyn. Once, after seeing him play with Gary while I was in school we hung out. I took him to a house in order to procure some herb. I knocked on the door “ dat dat dat” and Bobby said “ man, put some rhythm into it- that sounds like a cop”. Ever since then when I knock it’s more of a dat da dat dat da dat kind of knock. The lesson in a Brooklyn basement was about floating over bar lines, playing the song and flow. He lives music and just breathes creativity. One of a kind.

in 1975 as a eager Berklee gtr student ( one of the 625 incoming) i went to the Zircon club in Somerville MA and saw Bob Moses with Jaco and Metheny. that was an education and a wonderful evening i've never forgotten. i think Jaco had driven up from Philadelphia that day and changed some lives in the audience. we got a close look at something special, not generated in practice cubicles.

I got to a show when he was on tour - John Medeski & Bob Moses, opening for Charlie Hunter, Adam Cruz. I think it was 1999. So great, incredible music making. He told stories about making his own sticks, what a great hugger Medeski was. My mates and I decided he was our favorite eccentric uncle that we wished we could hang out with more often. They all jammed together at the end of the night. He was taking a solo and just stopped dead in the middle and said something like, "I don't want to be taking all the limelight". Charlie Hunter's mouth opened wide, smiling, and his eyes lit up, like, "WTF is happening?", and Moses came right back in on the beat without messing anybody up. It was kinda mind-blowing for a second. He was so friendly and humble, and when he and Medeski were playing, his hands seemd to be floating above the drums, waiting for the rhythm to move him, excited with the twists & turns the jams were taking. I feel Lucky to have witnessed it. Looking forward to seeing the film.

True story. I hung out with Rakalam (“Bob”) while he was in Denton, TX playing with Gary Burton. We went to visit someone I knew in order to acquire some grass. I knocked on the door “knock knock knock” in a straight rhythm. He said “that sounds like a cop- put some rhythm in it”. Every time after that anytime I knock on any door it’s “ da dat da dat da da dat” or some rhythmically musical knock. After moving to NY I took some lessons with him. The lessons were just as organic as thinking about a simple knock.

Ill tell you what, this dude played with some greats back in the day, but what has he done lately? Rakalam, you talk some shit about how to play but when are you gonna put a new album out? I think youve become to comfortable being a teacher. I think you like making your students feel like shit so they try harder. Thats well and good and i get the "zen" of being an aggresive teacher and all but how about you put out an album worth while instead of talking shit? Im not talking bout some psuedo spiritual jazz album with munoz either... How bout you lead a group that has something to say instead of bullshittin bout yo glory days?

Bob is one of the greatest musicians I've ever seen. I had the good fortune to see him play a couple of times when he was in St. Louis with Gary Burton around 1973. He blew me away in those performances and I've been a huge fan ever since. I rarely approach drummers after a performance but I just had to speak with Bob to tell him how inspirational I found his performances. He was very open and approachable and even shared a few insights about his drumming inspirations. I hope he recognized my sincere love of his playing. Bob is truly one of the greats!
