Ira Keeler and Steve Gawley were my two favorite phone interviews when I wrote an article about the original Star Tours ride for Star Wars Insider magazine in 2007. In addition to being modelmakers for the ride film, both of them were visible in cameos in the finished attraction. Steve was the red leader pilot visible on the cabin monitor over on the right, and Ira was the tech in the booth who ducks down when it looks like ST 45 is going to hit the fuel speeder at the very end. Many had falsely believed Ira's cameo to be George Lucas, but with the help of a photo from Ira's personal collection, we were able to show that was simply unfounded speculation that had taken on mythic status. I also spoke to four other ILM artisans and three of the Disney Imagineers, but Steve and Ira both had a way of making you feel like you were an old friend, so those chats really stand out from that experience.

This was the morning after my family drove to California for the first time and passed over the GG Bridge on our way to my wife's hometown of Modesto, due east from SF. Oddly discovered when we woke up the next day this had occurred just after my wife showed me her middle school that George Lucas went to and an amazing park he funded near her family's house.
