George never went to England. He was from the Middle East.
@FrSteveMaciasКүн бұрын
But you are correct that St. George never set foot in England-he was likely born in Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey) and served as a Roman soldier before his martyrdom in the early 4th century. However, his veneration as England’s patron saint is not about geography but rather the ideals he represents. St. George’s connection to England emerged during the Crusades, when returning knights brought back devotion to him as a model of Christian chivalry. His legendary slaying of the dragon symbolized the triumph of good over evil, resonating deeply with medieval ideals of knighthood and divine justice. King Edward III cemented this association in the 14th century when he made St. George the patron of the Order of the Garter, England’s highest order of chivalry. By the time of the Hundred Years’ War, English soldiers marched under the banner of St. George, invoking his name in battle.

It’s always struck me as fairly obvious that only the Anglican Catholic Church in N/A can be relied upon to hold the line against the encroachment of female clerics. The down side for you would be that they aspire to become a rite of the Roman Catholic Church if and when the Pope may decide that he could tolerate them. But failing that then the only other refuge from the monstrous regiment of women would have to be one of the eastern churches such as the Orthodox Church in America.

Years ago I delivered a message on the church’s “organic” unity in spite of institutional disunity - that the Body of Christ is one, in spite of human institutions. When you can accept that, Christians are in all denominations and polities and their unity is in Christ, you can be a much happier Christian. It gives freedom to be in “the pro-life March with Roman Catholics,” as you stated. I worked (secular work) for several years in a church-related institution under an administrator who was a defrocked minister of the sponsoring denomination. I was working alongside many very devout and faithful Christians of that denomination, but this guy was an obvious phony. I could see why he was defrocked. Church institutions are a necessary evil, helping create tools for the work of the Body, but they shouldn’t themselves be considered the sign of unity. That is only found in Jesus Christ.

I understand that you desire legitimacy through tracing the Anglican Church back-especially as a religious. However, ultimately, the Anglican Church is a compromise which adapted as a result of an extraordinary and long-standing persecution of Catholics. It is a denomination created by, and subject to, the state. The ‘Christianity’ of the Celts was a Christianity that was subject to Rome and occurred as a result of St Patrick and his disciples in the AD 400’s. The Christianity of England resulted from St Augustine in the 500’s. Both were subject to the Pope and Rome, although, like all Catholic regions, both possessed individual characteristics and, indeed, the Irish Catholic Church was influenced by some Druid attitudes and practices - after all, St Patrick catechised a Druid country. The Anglican Church was formed by Henry VIII and, as such, the break with Rome and the installation of Thomas Cranmer as a substitute pope meant that the church was within the jurisdiction of the crown and the lands of the Church - basically communally-held property in trust for the poor- were handed over to those who would support the Tudor claim to the throne. This, the priories- hospitals for the poor, became elegant dwellings for wealthy families loyal to the Tudor rule; the abbeys, similar- once the centres of learning and teaching, now the property of the wealthy, and the chantry chapels, once centres for praying for the souls in purgatory and which also served as local schools to teach the non-aristocracy children, were plundered to the coffers of Henry viii, (after an inventory by Cromwell). This desecration of the chantry chapels resulted in the lack of literacy that England was familiar with in the subsequent centuries and which was wrongly assumed to have existed prior to the Reformation. The Alms houses, too, were houses given to the poor in return for praying for the souls in purgatory. The poor had no relief at all until the awful workhouses were brought in later. This was the church established by Henry VIII under the guise of independence from Rome. Christ established his church on earth under a visible head who was the vicar of Christ - the minister analogous to Elias. You can parse the history all you like, but the Anglican Church was founded in the 1500’s as the result of a huge and traumatic rupture with the Church founded by Christ. Thousands of Catholics were killed by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I for the fact of being Catholic. That is simply a fact. You cannot create a history that predated the reformation because, although Henry claimed to be Catholic , even while desecrating Christ’s body on earth, the later theological justification for the creation of a new religion was based upon Luther, the puritans and the theology that arose at the reformation.

Jonah - The Roman rite was first introduced to Southern part of the Island at Kent by St. Augustine in 664 (where the Celtic Bishops claimed their Rite from St. John). It did not penetrate beyond York until much later with William the Conqueror (1066) who reorganized the English Church under the Roman diocesan model. Irish Romanization didn't happen until even after that with Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169 to complete the Gregorian Reforms.

@@FrSteveMacias Okay, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Pope is Patriarch of the West & so the Patriarch of all Christians who would be in Britain. They always venerated the Pope because he was their Patriarch. The Latin Rite (particular Church in Catholicism) employed various liturgies as a part western rite. There are still varieties employed today.

England was Roman Catholic up until the reformation. The English Catholics owed their faith to the Papacy. All those saints and missionaries that went to England Ireland Wales and Scotland they all looked to Rome. The papacy has always been the centre of unity within the church. It has always retained the faith and morals of the church from the time of the apostles. The Chair of Peter is the chair of unity. Outside of the chair of Peter there is no unity. I almost jumped to Roman Catholicism, but this video really gave me pause and it’s making me really examine Anglicanism. The Roman Catholic Papacy is very hard for me to accept, but at the same time most Protestant denominations today have gone off the rails in terms of Church doctrines, and there’s no real solid historical foundation in these denominations. Anglicanism is a viable alternative to Roman Catholicism IMO.

No...the English Church WAS Roman. If not, what did Henry VIII and Elizabeth I seperate themselves from?
@alhilford23453 ай бұрын
They separated from the authority of the Bishop of Rome. Henry declared himself the Supreme Head of the Church in England, and that is how he could close the monasteries, abbeys and Catholic schools, keep the proceeds for himself, and execute anyone who refused to sign the document declaring his position as head of the Church in England. Catholics who stayed true to the Faith and to the Pope were disparingly labeled 'Roman' Catholics, 'Romanists' and 'Papists' as an insult. Elizabeth's government passed laws ordering everyone to attend the new Protestant Sunday services, and those who refused were subject to heavy fines and imprisonment.

It is nearly impossible for a well-meaning layman to navigate these waters- even one who has studied the Bible for many years. I find myself wondering if I crossed the Tiber hastily given the current state of things in Rome. An authoritative list of references would be especially helpful here, father. The British isles were autocephalous, and so were the 4/5 patriarchs. Unfortunately, the Anglican Church has fallen into deep deep heresy, but I would encourage you to try and explore Orthodoxy and our holiness, ancient Liturgy, and unchanging nature. God or a supreme being is apriori in most cultures... except atheism. Many cultures change the ontological nature of a supreme being... Odin and Zeus come to mind. The understanding of an supreme deity devolved into polytheism. The supreme was demoted from omnipotence. A pantheon was also created. Deity was highly anthropomorphised. Nimrod was the propogator of this antichrist religious ideology.

Agreed that IRL being church, fellowship, worship and discipleship is the way forward. What is YOUR circle of influence? I think of RZ's Reconquista plan which is nothing more than a slightly organized version of working within one's own circle of influence. Are you a layman? Find an orthodox pastor, join his church and support the heck out of it. Can you join a committee? Join it! Can you join a seminary faculty? (not achievable by everyone of course) Join. Can you become a seminarian for a "squishy" ACNA diocese (or heck, even TEC) and watch what happens to your circle of influence! Nothing will change over night but remember that the progressives won because they played the long game: they didn't pack up and leave after various setbacks, plodded long even for decades, worked out how to form friendly relationships with conservatives and traditionalists, waited for people to retire, joined committes, slowly voted for their friends to various offices, joined seminaries, got ordained, waited some more and then slowly and incrementally brought in changes. It worked for them, it will work for us.
