Notice how Evans does his solos, he always plays the melody, only slightly varied. Young pianists should learn this lesson, enough with that nonsense of 1000 notes per bar 😊

It's pretty hard to cut Percy Sledge on a song that was written for him, and which he made into an all-time cl;assic. But Dan and Spooner pull it off here. Never fails to send chills down my spine. (I heard them do it at the Chicago Blues Festival some years ago, and it was just as memorable there.)

My teacher led me here. As a pianist, I strongly recommended that I listen to these two's music when learning German Lied. he is absolutely right. It's hard to find more accurate music.

Petfect example of a rattled brain, gained from time spent in the East Village, living off the dregs of dwindling once youthful talent and fame, left a shattered mess, by fleeting time, and tone deafness...no disrespect intended. I was in the East Village myself at that time, so understand it.

Amazing to see these songs performed in as-yet unfinished/unpolished states: Ben singing "Never Could Have Been Worse"! A rather-rollicking version of "Each and Every One"! John Martyn's "Don't You Go"!!! AWESOME!

Ive been rocking with Tracey Thorn when she was in The Marine Girls, and subsequently found my way into EBTG, in 1986 with Native Land, and i was lucky enough to see them in concert at Carnegie Hall in 1989. They're a really tight band, and when fleshed out on stage with supporting members the sound is rich .

What a cool find. Have enjoyed both solo albums and love their early recordings. I have always been a fan of Ben's guitar playing, he introduced jazz cords to me in my teens and between him and early Style Council influenced me into playing jazz guitar till this day. BTW, I never knew he played a beautiful vintage Gibson Byrdland and the Rickenbacker live. Had a chance to see them play in 88' and to this day one of the most memorable live gigs on my list. Had a chance to meet them in person in the early 90s and they were both the kindest sweetest people to chat with. Tracy always reminded me of the female Morissey but without the drama. Thanks for the video!

It's such a pleasure to see and hear this recording. Tracey, as gorgeous as always, shows such amazingly youthful vocal ability, untrained. In a matter of a few years she started to get much better with her breathing, phrasing, and overall skill. BUT, hearing her here is sooooo wonderful, as it allows one to see/hear such an early performance, and then to compare it to later recordings, giving us a richer appreciation for Tracey's vocals. I've swooned over Tracey since her solo work, just after the Marine Girls, on into these late days. XOX

I've only recently gotten into EBTG, but I really enjoy their first few albums and it's cool seeing their very early stuff done in the jangle-rock stylings of Love Not Money. I thought I'd post a list of the songs performed, along with timecodes and where they came from for anyone who's interested: 1. This Love (Not For Sale) ~ from "Love Not Money" [0:14] 2. Frost and Fire ~ from "Eden" [3:21] 3. Never Could Have Been Worse ~ from "Everything but the Girl"* [7:49] 4. Another Bridge ~ from "Eden" [10:50] 5. Ballad of the Times ~ from "Love Not Money" [13:25] 6. Tender Blue ~ from "Eden" [17:03] 7. Native Land ~ from "Everything but the Girl"* [21:32] 8. Soft Touch ~ from "Eden" [24:57] 9. Each and Every One ~ from "Eden" [27:12] 10. Don't You Go ~ from "Native Land (single)" [31:45] 11. Easy as Sin ~ from "Everything but the Girl"* [35:55] 12. Anytown ~ from "Love Not Money" [40:37] *Everything but the Girl is an American only album that was a mix of songs from "Eden" and singles/b-sides related to the album; I figured it'd be easier to refer to that album rather than making note of singles and the like

Check out Tracey's work before EBTG, especially her solo albums. The songs are melancholic. Her working with Ben added a ton more rhythms and drove the evolution of what has become a pair of amazing lyricists/musicians.

I don't think anything beats their first three albums. I saw them here in the states in NYC's The Ritz for "Baby..." in 1986 on a stormy, wintry night. Magical. They were Gold back in the day. Now, no.
