All you have to do is look at Patti Lupone’s face. This is a perfect performance of this classic song. ❤

The song is pure genius. If you try to out perform the song, you will automatically fail. You will succeed if you try your best, in character, to highlight the song, especially the out-of-this-world lyrics. Remember that LuPone...even though I fear it's way too late.

While I love everything Patti Lupone does, I saw the original in the 70s and have to say Angela Lansbury OWNS the part of Mrs. Lovett. Forever.

I absolutely love this!! How much all of these ladies have nothing but the utmost respect for one another. The performances of each of the ladies this night were phenomenal! I never loved Patti LuPone, but it is undeniable how much she respects the ladies in red and enjoys the show. Her little ode to Elaine Stritch in The Ladies Who Lunch makes me chuckle. Her faces at 2:55 at the “Wait a goddamn minute!” are just amazing!

I could/may watch this a thousand times. It's absolutely brilliant. An artist at the top of her form. Absolute command of the music and lyrics (a couple of minor infelicities). Wonderful articulation. I absolutely love it. But do also look at the Elaine Stritch version. She's not a great singer, but there's something else. You feel the vulnerability beneath the sarcastic criticism. When she sings about the "ladies who watch," you know she knows. Which is better? It's an uninformed question. They are both wonderful. I'll probably listen to Patti more often - because she's great - but also because her version is easier to listen to: I see a brilliant artiste absolutely in command. Look at the others on stage greats admiring her. Stritch's version is harder because she's caught the tormented woman that Sondheim imagined. I hope you understand that I love both versions - and think both women are amazing. PS: It's the same with Judi Dench and "Send in the Clowns." There are better singers, but she captures the essence.
