Gained 14,000' in 21 thermals while turning and another 2,300' while flying straight. Since the forest is mostly closed due to the recent fires we have to stay West of area I do much of my usual flying. Even when they let us return a lot of it will be charred. I'll be glad if I can fly above snow again this winter.

Extremely crisp and clear video excellent color matching! The views are paradoxically puzzling, for some reason, all the familiar places look different in this video. I was having a hard time orienting myself until the end when I finally started recognizing things. I really like the music, I'm going to shamelessly copy this track on some of my own videos! I liked the close pass by that paraglider pilot on the Photon. I am sad lately to see the once green and lush LZ at Andy Jackson so brown and dead. I'm starting to lose hope that it will ever come back.

@@NelsonsWings the music came from kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJaVfGWGrNCksKM I was delighted with how clear the video came out. I was too tired last evening to narrate the video and tell a story about the flight. I woke up sick today which explains why I flew sub par. I didn't even see my buddy Tom on his Photon until I was giving him a wingtip wedgie. He had seen me coming and was ready. We laughed about it in the LZ. There were some big flights by two PGs I had briefed before they launched. It's nice to pass on some experience just as many others have done for me. I am officially a has-been these days.

It never ceases to amaze me how great it is to live in an era where the reality of human flight is possible, without engines, without large bulky aircraft, just simple machines that can be easily carried on a car or on one's back that allow us to fly like a bird, the kind of flight humans dreamed of for thousands and thousands of years, and we are living in a time where it's possible - where anyone with a little money, and willingness to learn, can do it. I never tired of it. Even a sled ride is fantastic, and the longer flights are mind-bogglingly wonderful.

I have absolutely no knowledge of the way a hang glider is flown, nor am I aware of the gear you use to fly, navigate and land. I’m naive in other words, (I skydive and scuba dive)…don’t laugh! LOLOL! The beeping, how does that work? How do you measure altitude (mechanical altimeter, computer altimeter, both?)? Is the position you’re in uncomfortable? What emergencies, aside from the obvious, do you face and prepare for? And…the most important thing (kidding really, I don’t want my fellow skydivers and scuba peeps to think ill of me!) how the bleep do you do what you do? How long did it take to “earn” such beautiful ability? You are bad ass!! Can you tell I enjoyed your vid? Thanks for sharing!

I'll try to answer your questions in the next few days. Thanks.
@hubbysswee4 ай бұрын
@@GlideLA Thank you so much! Please take your time. I know I’ve asked for a lot of info. Be safe!!
@GlideLA4 ай бұрын
@@hubbysswee Here's the short version. The glider is controlled by shifting your weight so you essentially tilt it to go faster, slower and turn. Every glider balances and responds differently just like any other piece of sporting equipment. The intermediate and advanced gliders have a rope that allows the sail to me loosened or tightened which allows the glider to fly better or turn easier depending on how tight the sail gets. That beeping is from my variometer which tells me how fast I'm going up. It make a low pitched sound when I go down faster than I want. It's actually a flight computer with built in GPS. I need to know my glide angle in order to reach my destination or a safe place to land. The computer is all electronic. I have been in the sport since 1973 and started with all mechanical instruments. I recently bought a vintage variometer and altimeter that was in perfect shape from an Offerup ad. I will modify the mount and fly with it for old time's sake. Flying prone (face down) puts a strain on my neck so I built a special bungee system that reduces the weight on my neck by 2# or so. This allows me to fly many hours. We have emergency parachutes in case the glider fails for any reason but these have to be manually deployed and done correctly in order to inflate properly and in time. I always fly with a GPS tracker so that my wife and others will know where I am. It has an SOS beacon that I have to activate manually and it will send a distress signal out for search and rescue to look for me. I never fly without my glass signal mirror because everything fails and it can save your life. I have already been rescued once by using the signal mirror. There's more. Much more but hopefully this answers some of your questions.

@@hubbysswee . Jon’s being modest. He has put together & implemented so much within the HG community, camera mounts & shots extraordinaire to his stand-out videos that track & have the coolest hanging music. From windy Chicago & (was it?) attaching sails to skateboards to moving west (young man!) into the thick of the HG scene. Mr. Vicarious Icarus dominates. Ha -he’ll even cruise the flat lands, where most fear to tread, to the airport & land his WW T-2 (or was it a 3?) for a pale ale (or 2?). Or go up to Utah or was it Idaho for a running ramp launch into the atmosphere, gaining for some 10K+ feet alt. comp. rides. Or hang from Falcons over the snowy ridges that encircle LA, setting err down not an option. He even back-tracks to beyond Lancaster & Rosamond airport into the Mojave & above the pickled aircraft of yester-years. & on & on . . . Honestly, I don’t know how he isn’t an instructor along with kite (“wing”) sales via himself. Perhaps he's an engineer & such is below his pay grade. But then, . . .
