5:45 - 6:00 - Please note: if you wish to use the NDS design module you will need to select a material from the NDS database as well (default Oakwood is not supported). To do this in section builder select 'Add from Database' to open the database selection menu and select Imperial - Wood - NDS then choose the relevant NDS specification for your application. For any further questions on this please contact SkyCiv support

Unrelated to this video, but wondering if you have any plans to implement fully BIM modelling ion your software in the future? Such as Tekla? For example of connections of steel members can be modelled directly in Structural 3D and then the FEA analysis to be done in the same environment, it would be a huge achievement! You already have the FEA capability in your software suite.

Hi there! Yes we currently integrate with IFC and Revit (.rvt) files to support BIM. You can learn more on this here: skyciv.com/integrations-and-add-ons/revit-skyciv-integration/ After importing, you can run Repair Model, as sometimes importing models from BIM might have some disconnected members, duplicate nodes etc.. After that, you can apply loads and run full FEM and Design Checks in the software. After that, you can export the model back out to Revit to complete the BIM process. Hope this helps and feel free to shoot through any questions you have :)

Hi there, only welded connections are supported so far. Soon bolted connections will be available. For wooden connection, it is not supported.

Dear Trevor Thank you for your nice video. Would you explain me the philosophy of increasing the loads and decreasing the resistance in LRFD design method . If we are at the elastic zone in HOOK curve or pass to plastic zone in LRFD method ? . What is the main concept by increasing the loads if we do not pass to plastic zone, or it is virtual and we remain in elastic zone. I can’t catch the beauty of LRFD if don’t understand the logic of assumes in LRFD . Please clarify it me if possible. My in advance gratitude. H Rahimi

Interesting video tutorial! I wonder if this great FEA modelling capability which is present in your software can be used (maybe with some tweaks and assumptions) to basically enable the user to model any form of structural elements for FEA analysis? Something similar to Ansys which is extremely user unfriendly unlike your software! Appreciate your feedback.

Good but many times or most of the time, wooden structures are not made up of beams and columns, the walls are always load-bearing so I think that a model must include the walls as structural elements and their contribution as shear walls to take the lateral forces.

Thank you for your explanations and this video of plate and shell element forces. I'm wondering how to calculate total Fxy force (shear plane force? - I'm not sure of this definition) which is parallel to the x direction. If we want to calculate total Fxy force which is parallel to the x direction, we must multiply Fxy force by length which is along the y directions?

Was the area load you added to this going in the +Y direction instead of the -Y direction? If so, it would probably be more helpful to revise the tutorial to get sensible results that you can demonstrate in more detail. It would also help to have a more realistic example to show.
@carterdeyoung1060

Just personally watching the video (I'm not affiliated) but I believe that the Y direction of load doesn't matter when looking for maximums of displacement and loading, because its not really using a "ground" for support, its a two way spring with a spring constant. But I also agree that it would be appreciated to have a more life-like example, preferably integrated with RC design because I believe the ability to add a wire mesh to the slab to be quite important for design purposes.

Helpful tutorial. I have struggled to incorporate crossbracing cables in my S3D models. The solver generates errors, mentioning it needed to remove a cable element for certain load cases, found unusually high displacement values (perhaps because a cable was sagging ?) ... and generally left me baffled. This video gives me some things to try so that crossbracing cables, important to my designs are used without my recent kludges: thin steel angle defined as "tension only" ...etc. Really hope I can fix my cable issues as for me they are really important elements. Because I am an amateur (not a structural engineer) using SkyCiv for my projects, I want to avoid asking questions of the SkyCiv support dept that a formally trained structural engineer would likely not find a need to ask. The SkyCiv FEA tool has already been invaluable for my design work. Will continue to learn about correctly setting up my models from SkyCiv tutorials. Certainly my residential design product/project will require hiring a professional structural engineering firm to analyze and sign off on the design, I use SkyCiv to validate my own design decisions along the path so the design is within a practical range of feasible before it is submitted for formal analysis.
